I would love some C&C on these two. I think the welder is a much stronger image, but there's some subtle beauty in the hills, too... let me know what you think!
I'd go with Virginia's suggestion on #1. Crop it in tighter. #1 is more interesting, the blue light of the welding is exactly what is should be (no color modification necessary), and the orange color of the sparks give it pop and contrast.
I love #1 it's an amazing capture. I also agree with the closer crop.
Canon EOS 40D, Canon EOS 350D, 50mm 1.8 MKII prime lens, 17-40mm f/4 L lens, 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS lens, 430 EX speedlite, Tungsten Continuous studio light, Pocket Wizards, Gary Fong Lightsphere, Stofen Omni bounce diffuser, 5in1 reflector
What an amazing array of different color temperatures; Blue welding, yellow sparks, green fluorescent, and red/orange incandescent.
I agree that to have it fit the challenge a tighter crop on the blue is necessary but it will be a shame to lose the bouncing sparks and wonderful mix of other colors.
The other doesn't do anything for me, even though it is blue.

If I could have found a cleaner spot that didn't have so much shrubbery around it, I think #2 would be better than it is.
Here's a crop of #1, though...
I think my favorite thing about it, is that it catches the three primary additive colors (red green and blue) while highlighting the theme, "Blue". Pure chance capture, right place/right time and had the camera handy.
Thank you all very much for the help and guidance, I feel like I'm starting to see things from the photographer's perspective more and more now, which is the whole reason I'm playing in this sandbox. I am truely grateful for the education I'm getting.

I think #1 would be stronger with a closer crop on the welder. Maybe a vertical crop. Maybe even square. But closer.
I like #2 as well. The blue tones are very evocative - such a peaceful feel to the picture.
For the challenge, I vote for #1 - with a crop.
