Proportional thumbnails

As I built my galleries I selected the "original" option for thumbnails and it seemed to work. Horizontal and vertical thumnails showed the entire image rather than a sqaure with part of the image. As I added images, th ethumbnails for the new pix were the square variety and I can't seem to change them. Any advice to make all my thumbs proportional?
