Got to see a SEC football game a couple of weeks ago - LSU vs. Georgia in Athens. Our seats were in the top row, top deck on about the 30 yard line. Carried my Canon 350D w/ 100mm f/2.0 lens; makes for a relatively compact system to carry around all day.

Shot these in bright sunshine, Av mode at f/4.0, iso 400, first one at 1/3200 and second at 1/2500. Cropped to show detail.

From a sports perspective, the shots aren't that interesting - just too far away. I might suggest taking advantage of the atmosphere and crowd and looking for those types of shots. There are always shots to take, but don't pound a square peg into a round hole - think of what other shots there are that might be interesting when you're too far away to get good action shots.
