Going next week and can't decide on some lenses. Here is what I think, please advise. Nikon BTW

Camera D700 ( will leave the D3's behind)

24mm-70mm f2.8 for sure
50.. f1.4 ? Maybe it's small and may be useful
135mm f2 DC ? Not sure
45mm f2.8 PCE tilt/shift Too specialized? but will be doing a lot of architecture
70-200mm f2.8 may be useful for longer shots?
200mm f2 may be good for shots off the boat?
14-24 f2.8 too wide for cityscapes?
1.7x TC for sure

:dunno

Appreciate any advice. Only want to bring 2 plus the TC

    Thanks, I have 2 D3's and only 1 D700. So it's one of each I guess. 24-70 and 70-200 it is.

    Howdy,

I agree with Art, with all that wonderful Glass,

    12-24, 24-70, and the 70-200.

I'd also throw in the teleconverter, light weight but really could enhance some long distance shots or candids.

Have a wonderful trip, and please post some of your travels.
    Take care,

Went to Istambul in 2008 with a D200 and the following glass:
    - 18-200 always mounted
    - 10.5 fish eye, mainly used in the mosques, Topkapi and Hagia Sofia
    - 12-24: had it with me, but seldom used

Teleconverter??? Have one, but don't use it. Don't know if using the teleconverter is better than cropping and enlarging a picture.

50 1.4: have it, but didn't use it in Istambul. Could come in handy for nigth shots.

Enjoy Istambul. It is beautiful, safe and exotic. Take enough compact flash cards, because You will bring back more pictures than usual. I had about 12 Gig fora 4 day trip.

    Istanbul
There will be many relatively close shots in the market places, on the streets, as well as Mosque interiors, people shots. I used the WA zoom a lot more than I anticipated. Many places do not permit flash, so high ISO and fast lenses helped.

You own the trifecta, so take them. But unless you're planning on shooting images across the Bosporus, I don't think the TC 1.7 will get much use. Istanbul's at it's best in enclosed places and spaces. But, I would definitely include the 50/1.4. All those closed in spaces might benefit on occasion from the extra stops that lens has. Small and unobtrusive can sometimes go a long way to getting a shot rather than large and professional.

It's been a long time since I visited Istanbul and western Turkey. Have a great trip!

I would throw in that 50mm prime. They are so small and easy to deal with for carrying around. And a good walk around length too.

When I was in Istanbul in 2006, I took one lens, the Sigma 18-125, and I never regretted it. I often wished for something wider, but never something longer. If I was lucky enough to go again, I'd take my Sigma 10-20 and my Sigma 18-125 (or possibly my Sigma 24-135).

Just got back here is my verdict
I used my 24-70mm f2.8 90% of the time and needed my 14-24mm f2.8 the rest of the time. I posted my pics in the Journey forum. Thanks for all of the advice.:D
