Here are some hungry critters munching on the leaves of my birch tree. The "S" shape seems to be a defensive behaviour.
#1 juvenile specimens, about 8mm in length

#2 more mature individuals, probably 1" in length

I expect they are larvae of the Dusky Birch sawfly Croesus latitarsus. The larvae become more yellow in the later instars.

it is a hawk moth, could be a poplar hawk or eyed, did it have coloured eye markings on hind wings?

I am fairly sure this is none of the British or European species. The author needs to indicate in which country it was found, as there are hundreds of candidate species.

Creature was found in the NC (USA) mountains, in the small town of Boone, elevation ~3300 ft, early summer.

It is most likely a Smerinthus species but it could be another genus. I have been unable to find a species with the tiny white mark near the tip of each forewing in combination with the shape of the outer edge of the forewing and the scalloped patterning and that subdued colour.

Unknown Butterfly
Anyone know what this butterfly's called? Found In Yorkshire this summer holidays, any help greatly appreciated! :-)
