Teach Your Children

Hi Y'all,

One of the pleasures of living in this area is the opportunity to view the development of the young Sandhill Cranes. Here's a few images taken earlier this year of a set of parent sandhills and their chick.

the chick watches as the parent forages

the parent gives its find to the chick

Sandhills keep their young close by. When both parents are present the chick usually has one parent in front of it and one behind it.

paying close attention

two weeks later you can how the chick has grown
663072933_LTZf2-XL.jpg

the parents are still teaching the chick to forage

the big difference now is that the chick is beginning to forage a bit on its own, with close supervision of course.

One of the parents comes over to supply some guidance. The chick hasn't noticed yet that the other parent is holding a snack for it.

before long the chick takes the offered snack

then its back to its "lessons" as it watches a parent forage

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

I can hear the parent Sandies now .... "Don't put that in your mouth ... Put that down!" "Oh good grief ... what have you got in your mouth now?"

Thanks Ira and I've seen many human parents who could get some child rearing tips from our sandhills.

    Thanks Ric.

Being a big CSNY fan I stole that title from them.

About 35 years ago Crosby and Nash did a fund raising concert for a group I was working with, the Vietnam Veterans Adainst the War. As was our practice in those days we got fairly high before the concert. C&N were in the middle of "Wooden Ships" before a rapt audience. Then one fairly zonked out vet calls out in the almost silent hall, "Which one is Garfunkel"?

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
    And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye.
    Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh
    and know they love you.

    And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.

    Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

I just listened to it. I think I caught a buzz!!!
