The pages where this is happening are html-only pages, where the images are pulled using the random photo code from this post - http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=629221&postcount=2.
I've seen it on my home page, and I've seen it on my gallery page, and I've seen it on my version of category and subcategory pages. It happens at work, and it happens at home - so I don't believe it is a firewall problem. Unfortunately it's not consistent, so I can't point to a broken page.
It's an occasional image. I just opened my home page, and 1 of 4 photos was shown with a red x. I did a refresh, and all images are shown. (Of course that doesn't prove much since the random image chosen changes each time.)

I have the same problem. Didn't notice until someone emailed me last night about it. Some galleries are worse than others. I have to refresh several times to get the pics to show.
Vista, IE8, no changes to system, really getting frustrated but I know you guys are doing all you can. BTW, I have the same files on another site and no problems viewing.
I have the same problem too!
But I found that if remove the site-protect password, the problem will be gone.
Then I use the Google Chrome's Developer tools to trace another page. Please see my attached image, you can see that the Apache returned zero "Content-Length".
I am a network engineer. My guess is your server load balance devices have some problem redirecting our image requests.

Go here:
http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/traceroute.mg
You will see the results on your screen and also receive an email with the results that you can send to us.
When it happens, it would be best if you contact us on the help desk so that it is easier to track and determine a pattern. It is much easier to investigate a problem while it is happening.
We did have a few reports of this about the same time that you reported this. We were able to quickly get that fixed once we knew it was happening. So I am curious to know if it has been resolved.

Hi,
Thank you for contacting SmugMug. The traceroute doesn't show anything wrong. Could you try a traceroute from you to us as well if you still see the issue?
Try these instructions to run a traceroute on a PC:
http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046
That will help us see if and where any problems may be.
To run a traceroute on a Mac, follow the instructions here:
http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/3073291
Copy and paste the results to us in an email.
Let us know.
All the best,
Sebastian

One thing I just noticed from your 10/26 test results is that you are using Comcast. I also use them. I am in Southwest Virginia and we seem to share some of the same servers on the Comcast network. I do from time to time see this happen and it is always because of a network problem on Comcast. I runt he tests and can see the problem right away. I also check with the other heroes that are accessing from all around the world and they are not seeing the same problems. So I am pretty sure it is not SmugMug.
Can i get you to try something for me? Install Firefox if you do not have it.
See if you get the problem there. If you do, install this plugin. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6647
Turn it on and visit your site. If you see the problem, copy the results of that into an email to the help desk. I just need to see the top table, not the details at the bottom. That will help us see the requests to the server and the response.

Try this test site for me: http://www.pingtest.net/
Try one of the West Coast servers like San Fran. Then try one that is more local.

and I've been experiencing a good 9-10 count from selecting an image to when it shows up the first time. Then again, there's the "temporary difficulties" screen up so maybe that has something to do with it.
