Only a small little meteor, but I kinda liked this one. My first star photo.

My attempt at stacking some star trails was a bust though!

That is a beautiful photo! What are the details of the shot (i.e. equipment, exposure time, focal length, etc.)?

Nikon D700, 17-35mm at 17mm, f2.8, 25 sec exp at ISO 6400 (one of the real strengths of this camera, I am figuring out).

    Good one!

I was up in the Sierras for the Perseid Meteor Shower. And the meteors came every one to three minutes while I was pointing them out to a group of city boys. Then I set up the camera and took 12 30 sec exposures (I did not have a remote there) for six continuous minutes without a single meteor showing up! Best I got was the Perseid Meteor airplane rolleyes1.gif .

    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all. How I did it. I went out about 2 hrs before dawn hoping to do a star trails picture. (This didn't work, or at least not yet, am trying to stack exposures in PS, but not liking the result.) Before I set the D700's intervalometer to do an hour's worth of 25 sec, ISO 200, f2.8 photos. I decided to do a couple of test exposures. I cranked the ISO to 6400 and took a 25 sec exposure. I actually did not do that much in pp. Just curves for contrast. As a meteor shower goes, it was a little boring. In about an hour and ten minute's worth of exposures, at a 17mm (FX) frame, I only captured meteors in about 4 exposures. More of a meteor drip. But this exposure was my favorite.

Fun thing about this picture. I posted it on Flickr as well and it got picked up this morning, briefly, as the Home Page photo. And in about 4 hours, it has 1400 views and 60 comments. My next most popular photo is about 50/5 after several months. Kinda fun.

I turned and got this the same morning, as my pre-dawn time was running out.

I love this - I love stars - and the composition, well, the tree absolutely makes it.

Both photos are very well done even though the meteor shower isn't exactly what you expected.
