Magnolia Gardens, 7/4/2005. The bird, Egret, took a "stroll" in the garden. by ginger

Very nice, Ginger. I like the reflection in #4 and I like the whole composition of the last one. Sorry I'm a bit late. Went out of town overnight for a friend's 25th anniversary party. Just got back. I didn't find any good pics on the trip either. :cry
Hey question for you: When I was photographing in that small garden near the beach this past weekend, I was chatting with a lady who reccomended visiting "Magnolia Plantation" outside of Charleston. Is your "Magnolia Garden" the same place she was talking about? She said it had nice bridges and lots of water for reflections and such.
Ben, thank you for the nice comment. That is a gorgeous area. It is in an area of old plantations, may it always be that way.
The house here is not the original for this spot, the others were all burned, destroyed in the Civil War, one was spared. Drayton Hall, but they each charge entry fees, they are fees of around 15.00 with house tours extra. Since I belong to Magnolia (it has the wildlife preservation, etc.), I do not go to the others often.
The point here, kind of, I was trying to get there, is that the birds like the egrets are not often in the "garden" areas. Bill likes to drive by the big house, original with the family, but known as their "hunting" cottage, anyway, here we were driving through that area, quiet on a fourth of July late afternoon, and there was the egret. I had Bill pull over, miracle of miracles, he did.
I was delighted to get these photos. I have been saving them, savoring them, trying to be sure to get the "finished" product right.
As some say, one is only known by the "least" of the work displayed, so when I have a gem, I am a bit hesitant for awhile to make sure I don't put up a softy, or something that is a bit off.
On these, the drinking one, I had cropped it...........I am getting paranoid to get the bird out of the middle, but the crop was too tight. So I redid that, full frame, as are most, so that cropping could be done later.
Of course I do have the originals, but I was very hesitant to put these up. They are another special get: an egret strolling where the tourist buses usually drive by. But it was a quiet evening..........it would be nice to live there and know what they do on the "off" hours.
The family, the original ancestral family, does live on the grounds, where is a secret, and who they are is a secret from me. The grounds are huge. Tourism is one, the only, way to keep property in the family. Or accessible and safe from development. OUr problem is the development around this area is severely over taxing the road in the area, the only road to and fro. As much as I would hate to see it happen, I am sure this area will change, as so much has.
I would like to try to find a conservation group with whom I felt an affinity, to join in this area. Something like the Sierra Club, I just don't think we would suit.
Davey, Ed, Phil, Ben, Angelo, thank you so much. I wish I had been out there today.
Phil, this is the Magnolia Gardens Plantation/Gardens near Charleston. I am sure it is the one mentioned. I would google it and give you the URL, but if you google, just put Magnolia Gardens or Plantation+Charleston, it will come up.
I almost didn't work up the photo of the bridge and the bird. I had wished that the flight shots to the bridge turned out better, etc. I just worked it up at the last minute last night, kind of as a finale to the set.
It is so difficult for me to make these decisions sometimes. I am really glad that you all like that photo.
That bridge is the one used in all the ads for Magnolia, there are other bridges, but that is the main one. I guess it belonged to the bird that night.
Sometimes that water is covered with algae, too, but it is more apt to be clear, or black. There is a reason for the black water which I never can remember. Tannin comes to mind, but that may be way off.

I think this is the best series that you've post. (that I've seen anyway)
Excellent.
