Test driving my Canon 400mm F5.6 on the weekend I was impressed with how it can seperate the subject from the background.

This bird (again at Serendip Park) was sitting in a tree at about the same hight that I was standing, it is inside an enclosure, so there is plenty of wire around the place .......... yup when I get the hang of this lens I am gonna be real happy with what it can do :clap :clap enjoy........ ....... I am really pleased with how this lens performs, though the weather really sucked so I couldn't try it out the way I wanted to.

I took my monopod with me and used it for the birds, it sure does come in handy.....it should be a lot brighter in Montana and Ohio than it is here at the moment.
I'm excited at the hope of finding a bird or a critter that we don't have here in Australia to photograph once I get to America.

Thank you Phil ....... Skippy (Australia)

Good quality long glass is a joy to shoot with isn't it? Nice capture, Skippy, with nice bokeh in the background. The real problem with 400mm lenses is that they make you crave still longer glasseek7.gifD

I'm lucky that the park is close enough to go to.
The birds are there in abundance very few birds there are actually in captivity, most are free to come and go as they please.

I will be going back there often once the better weather gets here, at the moment it's Winter here........... thanks for looking Ben..... Skippy (Australia)

I'm keen to try this lens with an extender, and was interested to see that you can get toooo close with it too...... I also saw a post that talked about puting Extension tubes with the lens to allow you to focus on a subject that is already close to you.......lots to try out with new lens that's for sure :D

My next toy will be a new Tripod and Head, then I'm done for a few years rolleyes1.gif yeah sure you are Skippy rolleyes1.gif:D

There's a few pretty Parrots in with these birds, but they were really skitish, and not impressed that I was in the Avery with them.

There are also 3 Torny frogmouths in that same Avery......however the weather sucked, the lighting was not all that good and I know I can go back anytime I want.........yup this little park is gonna be a place to visit a lot :D

I really can't wait to try it out at the Zoo, but I doubt that's gonna happen before I head off to America.....thanks for looking Ed..... Skippy (Australia)

AJ Serendip is Duck Heaven for sure rolleyes1.gif they get all kinds of ducks come into the Sanctuary.....I'm sure it's because they can come and go as they please, and they obviously feel safe there.

There are hundreds of Kangaroos in the surrounding property at times, I remember taking a friend from America down the back road to show her just what a few hundred Kangaroos look like in one spot, and she was beside herself with joy rolleyes1.gif should have seen the look on her face :jawdrop eek7.gif most folks who are not from Australia will only ever see Kangaroos in Zoo's.
They got a few Emu's out there too, only thing is they usually take off if get close to the fence..... Skippy (Australia)

Pete, I love Animals, and I knew I didn't have much of a hope at capturing them if I didn't get a bigger lens....... while choosing the lenses I own now, I tried hard not to double up on the distances they covered.

I am very happy with all the lenses I have chosen so far, not sure that I could really go any bigger with a lens because of the weight of them, the 400mm is not too bad as far as weight goes, it's quite long, but gosh if it had an image stabilizer in it, I doubt I could carry it.

I've only had a chance to try the 400mm out once so thing's can only get better hu clap.gif I'm yet to meet anyone who actually got worse the more they got used to their gear........can't wait till the Spring and Summer get here clap.gif

Thanks for commenting Pete....... Skippy (Australia)

    hi skippy

nice capture-now that you are becoming a birder you need to identify the bird by common and scientific names-i think this is a crested pigeon.

you might like to get a field guide to australian birds-there are a few good ones out there..

It will be nice to go back when this weather improves, the Park is not too far from where I live, and it's free clap.gif then I need to get to the Zoo and try the lens out on some larger animals, the Avery at the Royal Melbourne Zoo is really really big.....has heaps of larger birds too.

My real desire is to capture a Mandril with the beautiful Painted Face, that's my goal.........Primates. Skippy (Australia)

Yep your right, I look at all those birds and I think......himmm wonder what this one is called ne_nau.gif
Same for the ducks......the sanctuary is not closed in so the birds are free to come and go as they please, so I wouldn't have a clue what they arerolleyes1.gif
One of the Scientists I work with is right into birding and actually one of the Dr's is right into it too.....I'll have to ask them more questions :D

South......Town called Jackson, I've been there before, my dear friend and family live there, they recently brought a house in the same town, I haven't seen this new place yet.

I'll be there for 3 weeks, we may be driving down to Oklahoma but that hasn't been confirmed yet.......not sure what the plan is till I actually get there.
I usually go to work with her, as she sells Land for a living, and it's a great way for me to see the country :D

Last time I was there it was Winter so I really didn't get to see all that much, this time it will be end of Summer start of Fall right ?

End of summer is mid september here.

I live up in the NE section of Ohio, SE of Cleveland and Akron. I have a little sister who lives in Colombus.

Eastern Ohio is hilly, central and west is flat. Fall is beautiful in the East. I'm only about a half an hour from the Pennsylvania border and the mountains there during fall are gorgeous.

I didn't get ny 20D until December of last year. I'm looking forward to the fall and getting some shots of the colorful leaves.
