I'll be really interested in hearing how this works. I use This which works well. I've been racking my brain for a better solution, considering I've switched to a laptop at home.

Nope, never even considered that such was available. Have you got a link to what you ordered that you can share?

I'd be very curious about this item and a little suspicious, too. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the card reader slots are run off the USB interface and NOT the eSATA interface, especially at that price. I think the eSATA is simply a pass-through to the front, convenient but maybe not what you're expecting. Therefore it's not going to dramatically increase your transfer speeds when reading from memory cards. I've seen several reviews on similar devices where the buyer was upset when they discovered this little bit of information.

As far as I know there aren't yet any widely available eSATA card readers that don't cost an arm and a leg. Here's one that looks promising, but the price is outrageous for my needs and it isn't available yet. Maybe in a couple more years?!

Yeah, I seriously doubt the OP's reader uses a SATA interface for the card reader. Those have been around on newegg and other sites for awhile. They have an eSata passthrough, a front-panel USB, and a USB-based card reader built in. Similar to this with eSata/Sata replacing the floppy.

There are pure sata-based card readers like this around, but reviews are at best "mixed".

I agree, this clearly is a USB reader. Not that it's bad, but you may have issues with UDMA cards and it's definately not fast. eSata to CF adapters exist, but the they are wacky and depend on the chip set supporting eSata hot swapping of drives, which some chip sets do not.

My other option was this from ADDONICS but I also use SD cards for wildlife calls and mp3 players and ADDONICS could not recommend a SD to CF adapter.......so I went with the ebay one if it is just a pass thru I will sent it back as I can get a ROCKFISH from Best B for $20 but they are slow taking upto 8 minutes to down load a full 8gb card......if I send it back I will purchase the Addonics reader....and try and find a good adapter for the SD cards............

Did you get this and was it faster than a plain ol' USB reader?

    tnx

Yes I got it....... but for some reason my XFX MOBO will not recognize it for more than a second.....the speed of download and upload (write) would have solely dependent on the speed of the card......it is on its way back to ADDONICS.
I have watched this CF adapter for over a year and asked a lot of questions but eveidently some MOBO manufacturers do make make their mobos able to do hot swapping on the internal sata connectors.......
I saw the cards show up ion My Computer as a hard drive.....close My Computer and reopen only to find the card showing up under Devices with Removable Storage.......then it was gone and never recognized again......not even under Computer Management........so I will have to live with USB for a while longer........

I did get to do one trial download and yes it was extremely fast.....I had 165 files NEF+ L JPG and when I did my normal drag and drop there was absolutely no progress box that would normally appear and show how long it was going to take to move the files.......in less than 30 seconds I had all of the files from card to storage drive....(approx 4gb of files......normal download time is around 13 minutes for a full 8gb card)...So I am really disappointed that my MOBO will not allow this to work properly.......

The techs at Addonics were very helpful and so was the tech at XFX (the mobo company).....
It is a very well built adapter with metal guide rails for the card to slide into and a push eject button......it fit very snuggly into a open 3.5 drive bay........

It sould be that I was just trying to use it for something that it was not meant to be used for......most of their (Addonics) adapters are described as HARD DRIVE replacements.........they are meant to be used for booting from a cf card.....they even make one that is a dual cf card adapter (over / under).

Addonis has been around since 1998..

Why not try a fire wire 800 card reader?

A true sata connection would be a heck of a lot faster than USB 2.0. I'd love to have one of these magical devices.

Probably because my computer has no firewire :D ..... I have an over abundance of SATA ports.......purposely purchased a mobo without firewire.......usb, sata and esata...............

It is my under standing from the people I know in R&D, computer wise, firewire will be going the way of the fantasically fast but now obsolete SCSI....

That is why I was really hoping that the ADDONICS CF adapter was going to work.......as I said above.....theo ne time I got it to be recognized and did a drag and drop it was amazingly fast.....~4gb of files in less than a minute.........but then the magic was gone........

I am going to stay in contact with Addonics and of course my mobo company to see if any one comes up with a solution........Addonics did say that some mobo sata controllers just do not recognize the plug and play aspects of some internally attached sata componets and just as luck would have it I must have gotten on of those mobo's...........which is a mofu:D

Very true. PC makers have abandoned it, and now Apple is beginning to as well. USB 3.0 will be out at some point and it's supposed to be 10x faster than 2.0.

Yes and since I had first hand looks at what SCSI was too do ...even the designers and developers said it would not last as USB could attach so many more componets thru 1 port (~125) without and degradation to signal and SCSI could not even come close.....except in speed.........

I skipped all the FW stuff due most to cost....I could not see the price difference between a USB external drive and a FW one......pl;us I was already geared for USB and the developers I know say USB will stay a standard for several more generations at least......it will have to take something really spectatcular to replace it.:Dmwink.gif

FWIW, I've been doing just a little reading. My understanding (and that may be flawed) is that USB 3.0 will kick butt all over USB 2.0 and will rival 3Gb eSATA. It will only be a matter of time before CF (or multi-) readers are out.

To take advantage one must have USB3.0 on the mobo or it will just be down converted to USB 2.0 ..........
