Band shots

My wife & I went out to a nice Mexican restaurant (in Burleson, Craig) and had dinner on the patio. They have a band playing out there on the weekends. I took my camera (big surprise) and asked the band if I could take some shots.

All shots:
5D2 ~ 85 f/1.2L MkI ~ ISO 3200 ~ 1/200 ~ f/1.2

Added bonus: These pics also show that Canon's "slow" FF camera & their notoriously slow 85 f/1.2L (the slowest autofocus they make, and this was the MkI version - 1.8 times slower focusing than the MkII version) aren't really that slow. While these guys aren't running around on a field, the f/1.2 allows for no mistakes at all. I only had three shots that were out of focus.

I'll let you figure out where the f/1.2 focus point was for each image.
Randy

Look like the two of you had ("buy me...) a good time with good entertainment.

And looks like you have nailed the ("buy me...) narrow depth of field with the lens. Fun set!

Yeah, it's a really good restaurant and a fun time with the band playing on the patio.

This is the same used copy that I'm sending back tomorrow, but, I'm so impressed with the f/1.2 that I'm going to pony-up for a new MkII version since the rebates just started.

Wow Randy that is one fine lens. I love how it isolates the subject so well. thumb.gifthumb

    Jack,

I wish the 85 1.2L wasn't so nice, it would save me tons of money compared to my 85 1.8. But, the 1.2L has that "something" that the 1.8 does not, IMHO. Sort of like a FF has that "something" that a crop body doesn't. The images are just tonally smoother than the 1.8.

The 85 1.2L seems to be a very "artistic" lens. I just shot a rose the other day and the SOOC image blew me away! It's that "something" that cost big $$$.

    Morning Randy,

Neat looking shots, those really turned out neat, looks like you had a good time

    That looks like Frescos?

Really love the selective focus of that lens, and can't wait to see what you come up with if you're returning this one
    Take care,

    Hey Craig,

Fresco's it is! Figured you'd know by the pics.

My plans are to just bite the bullet and get a new copy of the MkII version.

Great shots, Randy! Has the band seen them? I bet they'd be pleased with the results. My faves are 1 and 5. Yep, I'm drooling over that lens . . . course I shoot Nikon so it wouldn't help even if I stole it from ya! rolleyes1.gif

Oh, what a beautiful rose shot, BTW . . . gorgeous. fabulous. lovely. magnificent. OK, I'm done now.

(I'm not clear on the concept...were you trying that lens out or did you recently buy it? I can sure see why you'd want one!)

I purchased the lens used from a reputable retailer. The lens has severe back-focus issues. On my 5D2, it required a micro adjustment of -20. That's the max you can compensate in camera. The lens was so far out that it was unusable on my other bodies.

So, I sent it back and will be purchasing a new 85 f/1.2L MkII lens. The Canon rebates just started also.

I tested the 1.2L against my 1.8 version. The 1.8 stacks up pretty well, but there are things the 1.2L can do that the 1.8 simply cannot.

A one full stop advantage for the 1.2L. That's 100% more light gathering ability and one full stop better bokeh. The 1.2L also has circular aperture blades which help with buttery bokeh. The colors are also very smooth tonally with the 1.2L.

I personally think the bokeh on the 1.8 version is a bit "sharp, too crisp, edgy". I can't really put it in words, but I'm not a huge fan of it. Yes, it is OOF and blurred, but it's not buttery smooth. YMMV

As to the band pics ~ I've not yet sent them any of the pics, but I will.

About the rose: That's the kind of "something special" the 1.2L delivers.

    Thanks for your comments Lauren
