Hi guys, what lens is he using? Is there a canon version of it?
On a sidenote....I currently use a canon 40D with 50 f/1.8 and 28-135 (kit lens)... Usually I just take pictures of friends or wherever I go. I kind of want a general purpose walk around lens. Would 17-55 f2.8 be a better choice or 35mm f/1.4L. Would the 2 stops difference between 35mm f2 and 1.4L make a HUGE difference? I am an amateur and I got 40D because my palms are too huge for XTi.

I'm not sure anyone can tell you with great accuracy what lens that is. Does it make a difference?
It appears that the camera neckstrap in the picture is for a Nikon D2Xs.
The difference between f2 and f1.4 is 1 stop, but there is a much larger difference in quality between the Canon EF 35mm, f2 and the EF 35mm, f1.4L USM. The f1.4L is much, much better overall.
On a Canon 40D, my best general purpose, walk-around, standard zoom is the EF-S 17-55mm, f2.8 IS USM. An amazing optic, with "L" lens formula, and it produces images with excellent color, contrast and sharpness.

lol ya...im just curious cuz that lens looks pretty sweet for the setting that he took pictures in.
If only i could afford both 17-55 as well as 35L......for some reason i have a good feeling about 35L haha

by the way that is from the movie "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" where Matt plays a pro photographer.I was "forced" into wathing it with my wife but I did pause on the cmaera shots...I agree it looks like the 85mm 1.4. He was shooting with out flash at a wedding..riiiight!

This lens is IMO the best choice on a 1.6x camera (it won't fit full frame cameras). It gives a very usable comparative focal range that equals a 28-88mm lens on a full frame camera. Lots of full frame zoom lenses were produced with this focal range because it is so useful.
This lens provides excellent image quality and fast focus.
The constant f/2.8 aperture combined with the great IS capability makes the 17-55mm a very viable low light glass. I haven't used either my 50mm f/1.8 Mark-1 or my 28mm f/1.8 Sigma lenses since I purchased the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.
Until I began using the 17-55mm lens, I thought that IS would not really be useful in a lens of this focal length. I was wrong... It is great!
I am traveling to China this Spring and my lens combination will be the 15-55mm and a 70-200mm f/4L IS on a pair of 1.6x cameras. I could easily make do with that pair of lenses but, I am also bringing my 12-24mm f/4 Tokina. The Tokina will work in extremely crowded conditions such as the Hutong alleys of Beijing and will be a back up lens in case something happens to my 17-55mm.
There is one downside of the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens; it is expensive. A less expensive but, not as versatile, option would be the 17-50mm f/2.8 Tamron.
