CNAME error

So I emailed the heros about it a few days ago, but never got a reply, so I just emailed them again, but figured I'll try my luck on here anyways, maybe the contact form is broken or something.

I have my own hosting now, so I had to re-setup my CNAME for "photos.chrisophoto.com" to point to "domains.smugmug.com" like I did before.

However, when I try to add it inside Smugmug, I get a "That hostname doesn't appear to be valid. It doesn't resolve to a hostname" error.

You can see here that it is setup to go to domains.smugmug.com:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/legacy/?formaction=DNSLOOKUP&ToolFormName=customlookup&name=photos.chrisophoto.com&r=235660&detail=0&type=CNAME

Help?

*Yes it's had plenty of time to propagate, several days.

    Hi Chris,

Sorry if you sent us an email before and we didn't receive it! I searched, but could not locate one. Lost in cyberspace it seems :(

I do, however, have your email that you sent us tonight. Going to have one of our domain experts take a look for you. They will respond to your email and get you sorted out :)

Well after 3 emails back and forth, they finally understand the issue.

Now it's being forwarded to a domain expert and will take 1 or 2 days for a reply.

I'll post up the solution whenever I get it.

24-48 hours for a reply to something like this is kinda... discouraging. Guess there are tons of other people with similar issues.

It's not so much that there's a huge volume of folks with these problems, as it is that everyone here wears several different hats, especially the experts that get things escalated to them. The heroes never know if we can jump on something immediately or if we're swamped with some other task and might need a day or two to get back to someone... so they tend to ask for a day or two to give us time to look into something.

How long ago did you change the dns setttings, and what were the ttls set to? If you changed not just the CNAME but the actual authoritative hosts with your registrar, that usually takes longer than the TTL expiration to actually propigate out to everyone. When you try to change the setting, we recursively query to your authoritative server to get the configuration, if that failed, likely we still got the old servers.

In anycase, as of now, our servers are seeing the correct data again and your custom hostname is once again set in your account. I'll ping the dns guru's barb escalated to and have them take you off their todo list.

It looks like you were able to add your domain name into the control panel. I ran our dns tool on your domain name and it looks to be working now.

Is this working for you? http://photos.chrisophoto.com/

We also say 'a day or so' even though Rich helped you in the wee hours last night and Doc will be handling you this morning (it's already 630am on the east coast and he's checking on your stuff)... hang tight, answer soon.

    Wow, hero overload!

Thanks for the fix guys. I just replied to you Doc before I had read this. Looks like Cabbey or Rich is the one who fixed it.

I was all "wow it's magically working now without me touching anything".

Guess for some reason it took longer than usual to update the DNS settings, as I changed them on Monday I believe. The TTL is set to 14400.

Thanks again, Doc you can ignore my email ;)
