Colors different in slideshow vs gallery view

I've read a handful of threads and FAQ pages about smugmug and colors, and I'm not sure if I'm more confused after reading them or less . . . In any case, I'm not going to get into the difference between colors on my computer vs those displayed on smugmug just at the moment. I'll come back to that when my head stops hurting from all the conflicting info about it.

My question has to do with the difference between colors ON my smugmug page when viewed in a slideshow vs. the SAME image also viewed on my smugmug page in the gallery view. The slideshow gives a significant bump in saturation, and shifts the hues of my images noticeably.

So . . . first, am I crazy? Do other people see this?
Secondly . . . why? Can anything be done about it?

Here's an easy way to see it: I set up a gallery just for testing different compression and saving methods when I was trying to make sense of all the color shifts I was seeing. I uploaded 3 versions of the same picture saved 3 different ways to see if the compression that I did and/or the compression that smugmug did after upload would show color differences.

I see almost no noticeable difference between the three, but I DO see a difference between how they look within the gallery vs. how they look if you view the slideshow. The colors are significantly different.

Thumbnail colors appear to be closer to slideshow colors as well . . .

Someone enlighten me? :dunno

    What browser are you running?

If you are using a color-managed browser (e.g. Firefox 3.5+ or Safari), then the images displayed in the browser are color-managed (colors are corrected according to your display profile) and images in Adobe Flash (that's what slideshows are) are not color-managed (thus their colors are not corrected according to your display profile). Which ones looks better to you probably depends upon the accuracy of your display profile and is specific to your own computer.

We are all waiting for the day when Adobe Flash is color-managed too and we can get consistent color everywhere.

Of course, if you're using IE, then all bets are off because it doesn't know anything about color management.

Thanks John - finally an answer in all this color business that makes sense. Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but at least I understand it.
    I'm using Firefox, btw.
