This was impromptu and fast! He was up in his fort so I'm below him, thus the kinda heavy eyes. These were a range of faces captured in less than two minutes. Ah, the life of an 8 year old! :D

Canon 40D, 100mm macro at 2.8, 1/250, ISO 400
put together in LR2's Print module

I just did this with my 7 year old son (*but with a pumpkin in hands). It is fun to get the emotion in the storyboard format. Thanks for sharing. Btw he looks EXACTLY like you in your prof picture.

Being around kids this weekend must have softened me a little as I find this series very cute. :D Well done on capturing the variety in a short amount of time, and awesome job with the bokeh and processing. thumb.gif

This is classic Elaine, and SERIOUSLY awesome. I LOVE these shots - the bokeh, the sparkle in the eyes, the conversions, the layout.... just perfect all round. LOVE. clap.gifthumb

Thanks again, everyone! I happened to have my macro lens on, so that's what I used here. The longer focal length mixed with shallow DOF made for some nice bokeh, I think. Of course, this makes the 135 f/2 seem even more desirable to me! I'm thinking of getting this printed on metallic paper.

What did you use to convert, Elaine? The BW is awesome - so clean and crisp thumb.gif

I used LR2 and began with a preset called PH Childhood BW. Appropriate, yes? Then I tweaked the vignette, blacks, tone curve to land here (it was too light and needed more contrast). I almost used one called PH Naturally BW which I also really like. It actually gets pretty close to what I wanted without so much tweaking, but for some reason, it seemed just >< that much too contrasty for this set, so I adjusted the other one instead.

PH Naturally BW is one of my all-time favorites - I use it a lot when the image will take the contrast. But I'm now off to go collect the other one to add to the list - thx!

Great photos. I've got the 40D but don't have that lens. I have heard and read that it's a great portrait lens. I see why they say that now. Gotta get out my wish list again.

I don't usually like to shoot portraits with a macro simply because, in general, macros are not known for their quick focusing. And when you're trying to shoot wiggly kids, quick and accurate focusing is so very helpful! That being said, if you have the light and the right situation, macro lenses can make lovely portraits. In this case, I had great, late afternoon light and since he was on his tummy, he wasn't moving much and I was able to keep the focus right. Lucky for me!
