Unable to set prices on Bay Photo prints

Hi,

Too often, I get in the frustration hurt box when trying to set pricing on SmugMug. Really, the site is not intuitive. That, or it's broken.

So here's what I want to do:

* I want to use Bay Photo for ALL my galleries. I'd like it to be a default (but I can change it on a per-gallery basis).

* I want to use a fixed markup on ALL PRODUCTS. Simple, eh?

So I go to pricing, select Bay Photo. Select "Apply this Pricing" and put in my percentage. Select "All Products" which matches 288 products. I click Apply. Nothing happens. The price in all boxes is set to, e.g. for a 4x6 Luster:

Default $0.38 Portfolio $0.00 Price $0.00 Profit <blank>

Why isn't anything auto-filling? I sure as heck am not going to do the math for 288 products ;-) If I do "save pricing" given the price on everything is $0.00, now every single item I have is no longer available for sale.

Needless to say, I'm frustrated, bordering on pissed. What am I missing?

Hi Bill, I'm sorry you're frustrated, here's some step by step:
    1. go here http://blloyd.smugmug.com/pro/setprices.mg?ImageID=388102692&ImageKey=XL8cG&Type=Portfolio

    2. click on the bayphoto logo

    3. select 'apply SmugMug default' from the "Apply this Pricing" dropdown, choose to all products from the other dropdown.

    4. click apply

    5. select % increase then your %amount, input it the small box, then choose "all products" and

    6. click apply

voila, all prods are marked up.

    Then SAVE PRICING deal.gif

    Let me know,

    - Andy

I thought that's what I did. I guess I skipped the "Apply SmugMug Default" step.. unsure why that's necessary.

So now I have the markup on my images, but they are not available for sale? ne_nau.gif

Maybe I'm missing something, but if I log out and go to a particular gallery and try to buy a photo, I get a "No products are available for sale" dialog. eek7.gif

Well, looks to be all of 'em. But you can start here:

    Thanks!

You had prices at the gallery level set to $0 which means nothing is for sale to visitors.

Set it to portfolio (I applied it here http://blloyd.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Death-Valley-October-2009/10185990_6RE9U#701736870_i6Z6t ) and all is well, try it thumb.gif

Okay, I see that now that gallery has prices set and I can buy. But the other galleries have the same problem.

I guess what I want is the equivalent of a chmod -R 777 * on the thing. I see the Portfolio affects prices for _new_ galleries. But it's not clear how to just say "Damnit, make EVERY THING I CAN SELL" use EZPrints and have a fixed markup percentage. I can apply prices to my Portfolio which affects _new_ galleries, but not existing galleries. And I really don't see how to set prices at the gallery level. I thought I did that; is there a way to do it for all existing galleries in one swoop?

I do have to say: This is not at all intuitive. I'm having to ask you for way more assistance and getting caught up in many, many ways, and I'm pretty darned computer savvy. Maybe I'm not sufficiently web savvy, but there is absolutely no guidance in the pricing screens to steer me in the right direction. If this is explained/documented elsewhere, it's not easily evident to me where it is. I do not wish to have to back out to SmugMug help and search for it, either, I really think you should have a guide to a walkthrough from the "Set Prices" menu item.

But, for now, can you tell me how to recursively set every gallery to allow images for sale, and then to set the price?

I'll also note when I am trying to set pricing for galleries, it asks if I want to match pricing from any of my other 60+ galleries; how do I define a preset? Say, "Bay Photo 150% markup" as a preset, that I can readily apply to any and all galleries immediately. That would sure be nice mwink.gif

Ahh, you command line guys! You can chmod, but you have to do it through the GUI, sorry. :) I'll explain below.
I see the Portfolio affects prices for _new_ galleries. But it's not clear how to just say "Damnit, make EVERY THING I CAN SELL" use EZPrints and have a fixed markup percentage. I think the important thing that you're missing, that we've failed to explain well enough, is the hierarchy. Portfolio is at the top of the foodchain, but it's the weakest and can be overruled by Gallery pricing, or Image level pricing. If no pricing is in place, Portfolio pricing rules the roost, which is why you're seeing it applied to new galleries; they have no gallery level pricing to overrule it yet.

It sounds like currently you have lots of pricing in place, but set on a per-gallery basis at gallery level pricing. You'll need to clear that out, and then Portfolio (site-wide) pricing will take over, and we can do this with a few clicks.

Enter any gallery, and use Tools>Set Prices. From the next screen pick "Galleries", since we want to price multiple galleries at once (or UNprice them in our case). When the next screen loads, simply choose "Clear Pricing" from the pulldown, and click any/all galleries you want to clear the gallery level pricing on, so that Portfolio pricing takes over. Then 'Save Pricing'. Done.

Now, you only have one price list to maintain for your entire site; the Portfolio level. Any change made at the Portfolio level will affect ALL galleries without further intervention.

In the event you shoot a family event and don't want to mark that one up, you would then price only that gallery at the Gallery level, and apply Default SmugMug pricing to it, and save. This overrules the Portfolio pricing, and would then be the only exception.
I do have to say: This is not at all intuitive. I'm having to ask you for way more assistance and getting caught up in many, many ways, and I'm pretty darned computer savvy. In your case, while you can create a gallery and name it "Bay Photo 150% markup", price it, then save it and use it as a template to apply to other galleries, this is adding extra steps and 60 galleries to maintain pricing and pricing lists on. With Portfolio pricing, you manage all galleries from one pricelist. Just mark that one up 150% and it propagates to every gallery that's not more specifically priced at the Gallery level. I hope that makes sense.

We agree, it's not as intuitive as it could be, and we're working to change that. But, it is extremely flexible, if you're familiar with it. If we can somehow combine both intuitiveness and endless configuration/options, it truly will be 'all that and a bag of chips'.

    OK, Gotcha.

I had previously (> 1 year ago) wrestled with pricing and probably had a hodgepodge of crap.

So I set my Portfolio pricing, and then went to "Galleries" and selected "Clear Pricing" for all and now I seem to be able to purchase from any gallery as a "Joe Schmoe" user at the default markup.

Knowing how it works now, I guess I could create faux galleries as templates. Or, I could just override for a specific gallery. But global pricing works for me, for now.

    Thanks!

Can I reset all my old galleries?
I also mucked around with my pricing like a year or so ago, when the system was different.

I've got way too many galleries on my site to go and reset them all with the new Portfolio pricing... is there a way to wipe out all the old pricing schemes in all the old galleries in some kind of batch process?

    Cheers~
