I uploaded a bunch of videos today where all but one uploaded and processed fine. The one file uploaded OK, processed for a long time and was then sent to SmugVault. Alll files were converted from .vob to .mp4 with Handbrake.

What was wrong with the file?

    Malte,

I would need to see the original file to figure out why it was vaulted. There are several reasons like length, unknown codec, etc. You may want to turn off the automatic vaulting of videos in your control panel. It will cause them to be rejected but it would be better than just vaulting them.

Send the video here attn: Doc and I will take a look: http://dropbox.yousendit.com/SmugMug

They were all from the same source so I'm guessing it had the same codec as the files that worked. They were all similar small in size if I remember correctly. I have the setting "Archive videos:" set to no in CP/SmugVault.

I'll try reupploading later and if that fails I'll send you the file for inspection.

    Thanks!

I spoke too soon, a 4 and a 2MB file, estimated time remaining 55 min @ 23%. We'll see if it gets there at all.

    YouSendIt needs more bandwidth.

The probably have a lot more bandwidth than you do. Ie. multiple large bandwidth lines going into their data center.

We might want to consider having you run some traceroutes and line quality tests to be sure.

It says now the files were sent successfully.

    Malte,

I deleted my earlier response as I was still half asleep and got my emails mixed up.

Your VOB files would be uploaded to your vault as they are not a supported playback type. The mp4's are converting correctly when we receive them. So I do believe that the problem is not with the file. But with the upload itself. I think this may be a connection issue.

I will send you instructions for the Traceroute via email. thumb.gif

Sorry I forgot to mention, I never attempted to upload the .vob, I sent it to you for testing. I uploaded the .mp4 file I sent you.

I'll try the connection thing but I'm sort of leaning towards a file error since the same file errored twice, in the reuploaded gallery.

    Malte,

I think I figured it out. I think it is too short. I sent it to my test account and it worked. But that uses a little different setup. I sent it to my live account and it failed. I took the video into MPEG Streamclip and simply seleted all, copied and pasted so that it doubled the length. Then exported that file as an mp4, h.264, 100% quality, limited data rate at 8mbps etc. When I uploaded that file, to my live account it processed instantly.

Instead of 6 seconds, it is now 12 seconds.

So I think that might be the problem. We do not handle tiny or very short videos well for some reason. Sorry for missing it the first pass. Sometimes it takes a few looks in different ways to spot the problem.

Could it be that the filesize also comes into play here? I used to have the exact same video up, but in the mpeg1 format that SmugMug used to require, and it worked fine. It would probably have been bigger, but the same number of seconds.

Will this be considered a bug do you think, or are short-short clips out of luck?

The way we process videos has changed drastically from the old process. So what worked before may not now. I doubt that we can change it to accept such short files or small files any time soon. Not saying that it wont happen. Just not any time in the near future. You can always add a little padding to the file if needed.
