Thinking about going up to Pro, but have a few questions

Howdy all-

I checked out the help pages, so I figured I would ask here as other might have the same questions...

I have a Power Account and have been very happy with the features in it, there are just a few features I would like to add and it seems like I need to go to Pro for that. (I already voted on it under User Voice) However I have a few questions before I pull the trigger. Yup I did a search first but still have questions:
  1. Can I have different watermarks on different galleries and different watermarks for different sizes? The page http://www.smugmug.com/help/custom-watermark-protection makes me think I can because Watermarks is plural.
  2. If I want to add watermarks to existing photos/galleries, do I have to reupload?
  3. Can the e-mail gallery listed at http://www.smugmug.com/help/camera-phones be a hidden or protected gallery?
  4. When someone sends an e-mail photo, will it show what e-mail address it was sent from, so that I can find ones sent by various people?
  5. Is there a basic markup pricing already set? Not that I plan on doing lots of sales, but figure I should ask.
  6. Is it possible to do a redirect from photos.bradfordbenn.com to my smugmug site? I read through http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=100417 and http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts but I am still not sure. I already have my domain registered and hosted elsewhere but might change in a few months to save $$$$
  7. Can I set digital downloads to be free?

Thanks for the answers and making my picture taking better (I am not sure I am photographer yet).

    Howdy all-

I checked out the help pages, so I figured I would ask here as other might have the same questions...

I have a Power Account and have been very happy with the features in it, there are just a few features I would like to add and it seems like I need to go to Pro for that. Hi, my name is Christina and I'm a Support Hero here at SmugMug. I'll answer your questions in-line below. But, if I don't answer something fully or if you have any additional questions please don't hesitate to ask, we're always happy to help! :)
    1. Can I have different watermarks on different galleries and different watermarks for different sizes? The page http://www.smugmug.com/help/custom-watermark-protection makes me think I can because Watermarks is plural.
You can have different watermarks for different galleries and even for different photos within the same gallery. However, you can't specify a watermark for the individual sizes. Watermarking is a pro feature. More information on watermarking can be found here: http://www.smugmug.com/help/custom-watermark-protection
    2. If I want to add watermarks to existing photos/galleries, do I have to reupload?

Nope! You can watermark your current photos quickly and easily. You can add or remove watermarks as often as you'd like. We won't watermark your original files though so be sure limit the largest display copy. (That setting is found in your gallery settings window.) You can add watermarks by going to the gallery and then clicking on Tools > Many Photos > More > Watermarking.
    3. Can the e-mail gallery listed at http://www.smugmug.com/help/camera-phones be a hidden or protected gallery?
Sure! Also, email uploads are available at all levels.
    4. When someone sends an e-mail photo, will it show what e-mail address it was sent from, so that I can find ones sent by various people?
No, we won't automatically show the email address but, you can request that people put in their email address as the photo caption by including it in the body of the email.
    5. Is there a basic markup pricing already set? Not that I plan on doing lots of sales, but figure I should ask.
All prices are currently at a default, no mark-up, no profit price. Pro account holders can set prices. And, you can choose to increase prices manually or you can increase or decrease prices by a dollar or percentage amount. More information on setting pro prices can be found here: http://www.smugmug.com/help/print-pricing
You should be able to add a photos subdomain to your site. Some registrars may have limits that don't allow you to change the settings you need to. Here's our domain name help page: http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts If you use subdomain.yourdomain.com instead of www.yourdomain.com, point the subdomain with a CNAME record to domains.smugmug.com and don't
add an A record as it isn't needed. Custom domains are available at the power and pro levels.

Can I set digital downloads to be free?
Sure! You have the option to enable (or not enable) right click protection and you can also limit display size. We'll automatically offer the option to save the photo if you have both originals allowed and right click protection left off.
Thanks for the answers and making my picture taking better (I am not sure I am photographer yet).

Can I set digital downloads to be free?
With your power account, you can install a Download button that will automatically show up for any galleries where originals are enabled and right-click-protection is off. It's described as customization #9 here. I do this for the other soccer parents on my kid's teams.

Hi Christina. I really do enjoy the support I get which is one of the reasons I am considering moving up. That plus I want a little protection over my photos....
Sure! Also, email uploads are available at all levels.

I am a little confused by this response, do you mean that email uploads are available at all user levels (Pro vs Power) or that I can customize/protect the gallery to my heart's content.

I have a hunch that I am going to need more info on this one as I get closer.

Thanks for the cool tips and tricks. I think I am not explaining well the desire for why I want the free digital downloads, I want to know who is grabbing the image. My pictures are starting to end up on more and more of my employeer's press releases (here is an example, all the pictures are mine http://www.crownaudio.com/gallery/sports/prudential-center/) which we are starting to "discuss" as previously mentioned. So I want to know when the PR firm downloads or the magazine downloads the image. That is also the reason that I am wanting to add watermarks, want to make sure I am getting my credit.

OK, then the download button isn't what you want. I don't know of any way other than locking down your galleries and then selling digital downloads for an actual price to know who's downloading them.

Correct, all account levels have the upload via email feature. You can make the email gallery public or unlisted if you like and even password protect it.

I learned some new things by reading the answers to your questions. And I've been with SM for over 5 years. thumb.gif

On number 6, yes it is possible. I have newpics.huntsvillecarscene.com mapped to huntsvillecarscene.smugmug.com. But to be able to do this, you will have to check with your domain name registrar to make sure they allow it. The support guys are great, so they'll be able to help you with this as well. :)

I think I am at my last question, and I want to ask and not assume. thumb.gif

If I do go to Pro, the existing links and locations will still continue to function as they currently do. So that my links on my blog will still function.
