For example, in the Smugmug view, the browser has to load a whole bunch of separate javascript files, process them, execute them, then issue another RPC request to Smugmug's servers to get the actual gallery contents, wait for that response, then dynamically create the thumbnails and main image tags which then cause the browser to start request those images. That means that the display of the most important objects on the page are gated by the initial page load, JS processing and then that first RPC roundtrip time. Particularly when a gallery is being opened to the first page (which is the 75% use case), a significant amount of this time could be avoided by just including the RPC data in the initial page load and avoiding the separate RPC call to get that data.
This is what I'm referring to. And it's why SM galleries are slower than 90% of web sites I visit, including my own. Even the random picture module on my main site homepage which pulls an image from SM is the last to load even though the weather modules are doing the same thing from other sites. I have a tendency to believe that I'm being steered in the direction of "it's just you", but I can't believe that when I've heard from clients that they find the site slower than I do at times.
I'll wait to see the new updates and see what happens. Hopefully it won't break anything. This has already been a jam-packed work week. :cry
I've found that turning off my customizations while reviewing images speeds load times for me. Now, the question is of all the SM themes and viewing styles, which is the leanest and meanest? Right now I'm using default.
If you turn off easy linking (the share button), use the smugmug vs custom gallery view and use the smugmug classic theme, I've seen a 300% speed improvement.

How do you turn off your customizations simply & briefly, for reviewing?
I just hide the gallery and then then change the gallery settings. Set everything back to normal when you want it public again.
I've also found that turning off the ability to buy items speeds it up a little more. Any way to remove the the javascript buttons speeds it up. Probably locking the view mode will speed it up more. Gotta try that too.
I'm going to figure out how to strip this thing down to nothing and make it fly. I've saved an hour already.

Just tried again, your galleries fly for me (as visitor or owner) in Win XP, Win Vista and Win7 on a 1Gb Ram plain vanilla PCs with nothing fancy. Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.

I'm glad to hear that Andy. My experience is not the same, so I'm changing things until it is.

The thing that bugs me is the photo-space going black between each photo you click on. (unless you've clicked on each one earlier in the session) Makes it hard to evaluate properly. Does this help each one show up immediately after the other instead?

Tremendously. I've figure it out--it's all about reducing client-side javascripting that puts a load on the browser and hence the computer. By eliminating customizations, I'm removing all my custom javascripting. By setting the theme to a default smugmug one (smugmug classic), it eliminates any 'pretty' stuff that the browser has to render. By turning off buttons for sharing, buying and changing views, the javascript for these doesn't have to load or render.
I've doubled the speed at which I can review photos now. And it's actually fast enough that I almost don't wait on it anymore. With my customer's view, I was waiting up to 3 seconds for each photo, and up to 5 seconds for an x3 if I needed to see an enlarged view. Now I don't wait at all for either, and rarely up to 3 seconds for an x3. My 12hr day so far has been very productive. Now to push on for another 4-6hrs and get this stuff hammered out.
