Quick keywording in Aperture

I'm trying to find a quick way to keyword images in Aperture because I don't like my current flow. Lets say I have maybe 10 or 12 keywords that I need to pick and choose from for a particular project. I need something faster than using the mouse to slide a keyword onto an image. Is there a way to assign hot-keys to particular keywords to make this task easier? And I would want to change hotkeys on different projects easily as well.
I shot a track day on Saturday. I had over 2,000 images and over 1,200 keepers (shot with slow shutter speeds, tossing a lot of images). I was originally hoping to keyword the car's make (Honda, BMW, Chevrolet, etc) but that proved to be way too time consuming and tedious with the mouse.
