I went to the Day of the Dead celebration at our cities community center a few weeks ago. I thought I might get a few good shots of some strange things. And I did. I was impressed with the whole thing. Great exhibits of "Ofrenda" and lots of kids having fun.
To break it down, the Day of the Dead is a celebration, remembering people who have passed away. Ofrenda are offerings to the dead. Some are creepy as hell, some are just a persons favorite things. It is like Halloween with a deeper meaning. The blend of Catholicism and rituals of the indigenous cultures is really interesting.
I got to try out the low light powers of my D300S. I was very pleased with the results at ISO3200. I shot these with my 80-200 AFS at ISO 3200 in the available light through glass. I would have been disappointed if I left the big gun at home. The exhibits were in really nice exhibit rooms behind glass and they were really large. So getting close was impossible.
