Hi,

I am about to re-organize my whole site and have to make a decision as to how I will do that. For making that decision or maybe postponing this large action it would be important to know when approximately the virtual galleries feature will be available.

Is there any rough indication about that in terms of which month or which quarter you guys expect this feature?
Greetings, Jan

    Hi,

I have exactly the same situation ... either I do a redesign now or wait for Virtual Gallaries. If I had an indication from SmugMug VG was to arrive next year the earliest, then I will do a temporary redesign ... otherwise I would wait.

Is it possible to get this kind of indication?

    Regards, Harald

Hi, I'm sorry but we can't say when it'll be completed and live - but the work has started!

When a photo is shown in these virtual galleries can the KW's, GEO, and
captions be edited? Imagine seeing the photo shown multiple times on KW and
map page. Plus might want a different caption for each virtual page.

I'm sure Nick's comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek because virtual galleries haven't even seen the light of day yet, and enhancement requests like this are already showing up. But the request to have the ability to caption an image in a virtural gallery differently than in the source gallery makes perfect sense to me. So I say why not mention during development when it just might be relatively easy to implement?

Let's say you have a source gallery in Journal style with multiple images of the same individual(s). Most folks would not subject their viewers to endless repetition by captioning every photo with "John this", John that", "john here", "John there". After the first image with "John" in it, nobody needs to be reminded again that "john" is in each photo in the same series, including the one of John on his motorcycle, for example.

But suppose the site owner later runs a keyword search to identify all his/her "motorcycle" photos, one of which just happens to be the single photo of "John" on his motorcycle (without John's name in the caption, but simply captioned "On his Harley"). Including this image with the original capiton ("On his Harley") will likely make little sense in the virtual gallery because it doesn't identify WHO is on his Harley.

Thus the sensible request for having the ability to have potentially several alternate captions for the same photo that might also appear in more than one virtual gallery.

Sure, I agree. Same for keywords. SM has been around for some time now and I suppose they made thousands of additions/features/fixes etc. It usually takes that long for anyone to realize the extent of trouble they are in ;-) We can't look in the SM kitchen but at some point all these requests can only be implemented when a couple of good engineers get their ER database design tools out of the chest and make a new DB model for all the data-flow scenario's that have landed on the table for the years. A big step.

My comment is in anticipation of the storm of posts that will follow the introduction of this new feature ;-)

    cheers,
    Nick.

I'm waiting for this too, my subscription runs out in 3 or so months and I'll almost certainly bale if it isn't introduced by then. The first week I joined I checked to see how to cross reference photos in different galleries and I was really surprised this feature wasn't available, plus it seems like people had been asking for it a long long time before I joined. I check this site and the SmugMug news site once a week to see if it has been implemented but..............nothing yet.

I really want to develop my site but don't want to make a start as a lot of what I want to do will revolve around virtual galleries. I simply don't want to copy/upload multiple photos, just one 'master' which can be referenced in several galleries. I'm not interested in workarounds either, just a short simple 'add virtual copy to gallery' option with each photo.

I'm not a pro photograher and don't sell anything here so maybe my needs aren't considered as important as some of the other folks on this forum but c'mon guys at SmugMug, at least tell us vaguely when it'll be introduced. Even an answer like 'not this year' would be better than nothing.

I can even cope with the regular downtime SmugMUg seems to have but the lack of Virtual Galleries is going to be a dealbreaker.

I'll try and play with them as soon as I have the time. What I've seen sofar looks pretty good.
Thanks to the techies that created this.
