Speedliter's Intensive Canon Flash workshop in Phoenix, AZ, on Jan 16, 2010. Sounds like an interesting workshop for Canonites.

Very interesting! As much as I dislike traveling to Phoenix, this looks like a not-to-be-missed event. Thanks for the heads-up, Cuong. thumb.gif

I don't like traveling to Phoenix either, but then I live in Orange County, CA! rolleyes1.gif Thanks for the link Cuong, I just subscribed to his blog and will keep a watch on it. Maybe someday I will learn to use my Speedlites more!

If you have a chance to hear him speak about canon and speedlights -- Go!

He was at Joe McNally's Dobb Ferry workshop to help the troubled canon folks like me. I would have been completely lost with him and I recently spent five days with him and McNally at a Paso Robles workshop.

He's currently in the process of writing an canon speedlight book ---- think the hot shoe dairies, but for help the canon.

I don't see a date yet for Vegas, so I'm thinking about the one in Phoenix and the date works out perfectly with my work schedule. Of course, Vegas is a couple hours closer with all the amenities. Still undecided at this time.

    Ok, I'm in. deal.gif

BTW, the PF Chang marathon is in Phoenix that weekend which is a huge deal (100K people or something ridiculous like that.) So if you're going to the workshop, get your hotel reservation early. I only know this because my wife is running in the race. We never go to Phoenix otherwise (it's three hours away), so what are the odds of that. eek7.gif

The bad news: I won't make it to the workshop in Phoenix. The good news: Syl is working on a 15-city tour for Spring 2010. Specific dates and venues are in the works.

If you want to learn the details as they are announced, you can sign up for the Speedliter's Intensive™ mailing list .

It's a two-step process: you enter your email and then you go to a second screen that lists the cities; indicate which of the cities listed on the sign-up form are most convenient for you.

    Thanks Cuong!

It sounds like this will be a one day only thing. Much like McNally's NAPP workshop was. I liked the pace of the NAPP workshop and feel that a 1 day would be good preparation for something like his multi-day thing.

April, I'm happy and surprised you came across Linda Jeffers' review of Syl's workshop. Linda is a delightful person who must have taken hundreds of pictures during the day. We've exchanged emails, and I'm going to try to get her to join Dgrin.

The workshop was great. It turns out Saturday's class was the first time he'd taught this workshop, so this was a bit of a trial balloon for him. Although if he hadn't mentioned that fact, I never would have guessed. Syl is a seasoned lecturer, relaxed and easy going. He was prepared and knew what he wanted to cover, so it just worked. In terms of content, it spanned a wide gamut. He covered camera and flash basics, nuts-and-bolts "this knob does that", strategies and techniques for portrait photography, use of many different light modifiers, reflectors, stands, cords, wireless gadgets, etc. I thought the class was a pretty good compromise of information useful for novices and experts alike. For myself, I'd say the nuts-and-bolts information on the Canon flash system was probably the least useful for me, because I'd already spent a lot of time over the past year studying it. It turned out I knew it pretty well. Still I did pick up a couple of pointers from seeing the way that Syl controls things that will help me be more efficient. The portrait lighting strategies and all the information we got on the various light modifiers and gadgets were the best part of the course for me. So I thought he did a good job at producing a course that will benefit a wide audience. Maybe some day he'll produce an advanced level course, and I'll go to that.

Syl's an immensely likable guy, low-key, but yet energetic. He loves fielding questions and if he didn't know the answer to something, he'd simply say he didn't know instead of trying to BS his way out of the question. I always appreciate that in a person.

So that's pretty much my take on the class. Definitely time well spent. Let me know if you have any specific questions on the day.

    Cheers,
    -joel

    Go.go.go.go.go!!!!! Run! Now!.

And make sure that you pack clothes that are a bit bigger -- you'll eat and eat and eat and eat. Tasty!

Kerry and I went to the Joe's workshop at Paso and this is Kerry's write-up of the paso workshop. When Joe held his Dobb Ferry workshops, he brought along Syl to help with the canon folks.

I can highly recommend any of the Paso Robles Workshops.
