Your shot is outstanding! If I may ask, what settings did you use on your camera? I find with my camera/lense if the object is further away from me the softer (less sharp) the bird. I'm sure my inexperice has a lot to do with it too! I have also put off carrying a tripod, it's too heavy.
Thanks, JustPeachy2

JustPeachy--Thank you for the nice comment--If you look at the post just before this one--both were taken at the same location. there were 3 Ospreys there. I use a 100x400mm, 5.6 Canon lens and all my shots are hand held. You really can't use a tripod for BIF---The camera is a 7D and with the 100x400 lens--HEAVY---That day I took probably 250 pics and I kept probably 5. It's really, really gratifying when you take a picture and you know it's a keeper. Just don't get discouraged ---That shot was AV mode, 400mm, iso 800, 6.3 at 1/4000 and the focus point was AF expansion---The light was crappy that day and I post process my pictures using PE7. I have learned from my 3 years of taking this hobby seriously that practicing, practicing and more practice is what you have to do--I wish I would have started 20 years ago. This is a great hooby.
