Hello Grinners!

I've been shooting a Nikon D80 for 3 weeks now. I'm just a dad taking snapshots, so be gentle - this is my favourite photo of our elder daughter so far. Any advice is welcome. Converted from RAW using RawTherapee, local contrast enhancement in the GIMP.

Very pretty little girl. Love those pretty blue eyes.

I was not able to get EXIF so not sure of you aperture but would appear to be pretty wide open. Focus on "her" left eye is right on but lack of DOF makes the right eye just a tad soft. With the lens wide open it can make the DOF paper thin.

Love the natural lighting on her face. Good job.

Very nice use of the light, and sweet subject...

Conventional wisdom is to focus on the closest eye if you are going to shallow DOF. Keep on shooting and have fun with her!

Thanks for the feedback. The photo was taken at 105 mm f/5.6; my guesstimate for subject distance is 2 m; according to the DOF calculator, DOF 4 cm behind and 4 cm in front of the subject.
I come from 'compact land', where DOF was always plenty, in fact, reaching shallow DOF was hard. There are things to (re-)learn :-)
