Dumb Nikon Lens Questions

First off....HAPPY THANKSGIVING......to all my American friends!

Dumb question time.
Is there any reason one should not use a non DX lens with a DX camera?
Will an AF and an AF-S lens work on a D200?
How about older manual focus lenses? AI?

That's all.....back to your left over turkeys!

In fact using FX lenses gets teh best performance out of the lens in that you don't get as much of the corner effects (sharpness and vignetting for example). All AF and AF-S lens will autofocus on the d200. You'll have to be more specific about exactly which old lens.

Nikon full-frame (FX) lenses will work fine on a Nikon DX camera.

It depends on the particular DX camera whether a non-AF-S (AF-S = AF motor is in the lens) will AF with the host camera. The D200 has the ability to work with both Nikon AF-S and screw-drive AF lenses.

I believe that non AI lenses may damage an AI equipped camera unless it (the lens) is converted. Otherwise older manual focus AI mount lenses should work nicely on the D200. You would manually focus (of course) and the aperture is also set manually. I believe the camera also needs a particular setup to work in manual mode.

I have a Vivitar Series 1, 28-105, f2.8-3.8, macro. It used to live on my FM, and it's a great lens. I'm hoping it'll work with the D200, set to aperture?

There's a table on this page from Thom Hogan's website that lists lens/body compatibilities.

Is there an easy way to tell an AI from a pre-AI mount? It works on my FM without stop down metering, so I'm betting it'll mount and meter without a problem on the D200.

Seymore...thanks for that link. I have a definite AI lens. Not really surprised, as the lens is only about seven years old. Nikon has used as many letters in their product identification as Harley Davidson! I didn't think it possible.
After a little research, if the lens meters at full open aperture, it's an AI. Otherwise, it must be stopped down to meter. Thanks again.
