I have a nikon d60, and I am getting into off-camera lighting. What would be a better buy 2 sb600s or an sb900

Depends on what you're shooting. The SB900 is much more powerful than the SB600. For weddings and events, I found the 600 lacked oomph to light a room effectively.

I don't believe that the Nikon D60 flash has a "commander" capability, so you can't use it to trigger the SB-600 flash(es) without mounting a SU-800, SB-800 or SB900 on the D60 to act as commander.

You might also look at the Sigma EF 530 DG Super flash for Nikon cameras. It has similar power and similar cost to the SB-600 flashes, but has the commander mode like the SB-800/SB-900, so you can trigger a second Sigma 530 from it with the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) control.

I have 4 Sigma flashes, for the similar Canon E-TTL II system, and they work great for me, even as a master and slave relationship.

A good place from which to purchase the Sigma flash in Nikon mount:

I went withthe SB900 as I did not want to be p***ed off because I did not have enuff power and wind up buying more flashes down the road just to replace the under powered ones to begin with.......and I read some reports on other forums that stated the CLS would only work if all the flashes were Nikon or if using sigma then the commander and all had to be sigma..........if what Ziggy says is correct, and I have no reason to disbelieve ANYTHING THE ZIGMEISTER says......that would be awesome to beable to run several Sigma 530 Supers in the place of SB900's at almost half the price.......or having to meter in some Vivitar 285's into the mix.........

I know the 900's are as expensive as some studio flash units....but are much more capable than studio flash can hope to be...........CLS rocks

I am trying to get a soft light off camera for portraits. With that in mind, and being budget conscious, what do you recommend?

Either the Sigma 530 super or SB900....but you can get 2 Sigma's for the price of one 900.....priced at BH.....who seems to be one of the lesser expensive retailes on these flashes......
