shadow/dark photography

Hello,
could you please explain me how I can obtain this effect? :

ok the canon 40D I have.. but how to build up the lighting?
With simple external flashes, diffuser? and no professional studio and materials?

    1) This one is simple. Just a hair light (i.e. light positioned on top of the model)probably with a medium size diffuser). It's possible that the same light is used for BG, but I'm not 100% positive on this (only, say 70%:-)

    2) second one is also not overly complex: two rim lights on the sides and a very weak fill one up front (or even maybe no fill at all, it depends on the exact position of the rims and diffusers used).

    I will try your advices to see what happens :)
    A I am relatively new to this there is a lot to learn :)
    This type of photograpy is really beautiful and sensual, you can look the other photos in the second link (from the same author)- most of them are just amazing
    I want a workshop too... :)
