Kicker??

Help! I have two alien bee 800's and not sure how to use them to get the great shadows, etc. Someone recommended a kicker? But I can't seem to find what a kicker is? Is is it a hair light? Not sure. Alien bees carries nothing that even sounds like a kicker. :scratch

    I moved this to the Technique forum.

    A "kicker" light is just another type of a "rim" light. It adds separation and potentially "depth" to a subject, but it's not for every situation because it tends to lend a "gritty" look to the image. A "hairlight" is similar but less obvious.
