That looks like glass that needs to be broken (replaced). I was watching Buffalo Sabres play Toronto last week and Ryan Miller shot the puck right through the photographer's hole in the glass and nailed the photographer in the face. Luckily he didn't hit the camera. Here's a link to a discussion about it.
Sorry, just replied in the other thread asking this question. No I see you have a second thread here to answer it. My instincts were right. There's just more "pop" in photos from the bench then there is through the glass. Occurs in almost every rink I shoot, for sure.

I shot in an old high school rink this past weekend. No glass or netting on either of the sides, just the ends of the rink. Great for clearer pictures however, you really need to pay attention. A puck went whizzing right by me, I ducked but the puck hit a child in the head who was sitting 6 seats away from me. Thankfully the child did seem to be OK but you never know. The family shouldn't have been sitting there because they really were not paying attention to the game.
