Swapping subdomains

I did not see anything about there before. I think I know the answer but need some pros to keep me in check.

I have swabimging.com registered.
SMugmug directs with a cmname to photo.swabimaging.com

For a while I had other stuff going on in www.swabimaging.com, but I want to change that and have www.swabimaging.com go to my smugmug stuff, no secondary hosting.

The question is how can I do it and maintain links I have sent to people in the past that were all photo.swabimaging.com? ie photo.swabimaging.com/clients/yourpics etc.

If I change the A record to domains.smugmug.com and kill the photo CNAME will the photo.swab.... redirect correctly under the www.swabimaging.com... stuff?

Please tell me this makes sense. Oh and please don't go to my other hosting, It is pretty much embarrassing.

Spencer, you just need to change the settings at the domain so that they point using a www CNAME of domains.smugmug.com and an @ A record pointing at 208.79.45.23

Delete any other @ A records as they will cause conflicts.

I have instructions for GoDaddy setup here: http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/GoDaddy+CNAME+Setup

    Hey Doc,
I am slow to work this out but I finally followed those instructions. What I was afraid of happened. Since I have links from other sites to my photo.swabimaging.com those links died.
It seems if you type in a link to pics that are photo.swabimaging.com/category/pics that is fine, but any links I had are now not working and that is kind of a problem since I do that too often.

Am I screwed unless I take my site back to photo.swabimaging.com? I am okay with that, but I now need that to be the default if you type in www.swabimaging.com or just swabimaging.com so that it redirects to the photo subdomain.

Can you give me instructions on how to do that? Thanks!

You will need to do some url rewriting/redirection to change any requests for photo.swabimaging.com to www.swabimaging.com while keeping the path information intact. Check with your DNS provider to see if they offer something like that. They should because it is a very basic function.
