Another vote for #2, but I can see what you were going for in #1. It almost works, but the horizontal piece of wood at the end of the pier is not parallel to the horizon, which breaks the balance. Get someone to fix it, OK?
Interesting images, I like #1, but the composition and the closeness of image#2 intrude on it while viewing.
#2 has the better composition and subject presentation.
Can't even imagine "Frozen Lakes" it was 77° today in Texas:D:D:D
But it is supposed to turn Colder for Christmas.
Thanks for the feedback, Craig. I prefer #2 myself too. The idea on the first one was to present a scene so stark that it would be an abstract shot more than anything else.

I'll send a complaint to the local municipality so they have the pier fixed!
Seriously, I like imperfect subjects like this pier, but I agree with you about its "out-of-whackness" breaking the balance. Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback.
I think if more of the end of the pier were above the horizon line in #1 it would strengthen the composition, though I'm not even sure it would have been possible.
While I think #2 is the better image, I like them both.

Thanks, Juliet. I think you make a good point. And yes, having the end of the pier above the horizon line was actually possible to do... I just didn't think about it while there
