iPhone Video

When I post a video to a gallery that was taken with an iPhone in portrait position (vertical), the video is being displayed sideways in the gallery. The original quicktime video is correctly displayed locally.

Does the SmugMug video converter make the assumption that the largest dimension is the horizontal one and rotate the video? In this case, the video is 480x640 and should remain this way... not 640x480.

Also, is there a way to ensure that users are shown the 'large' view that includes this header?
"Sizes: Web · iPod/DVD · Auto · Owner Save | 2 of 2 | Show Details | Close"

For some reason it seems that the default option was coming up as the tiny version of the video.

Thanks,
Eric

It's a bug, logged in our bug system already. I'm sorry we can't yet deliver properly oriented iPhone videos.

    Soon, I hope.

I'll check on the size thing - it should always show the largest one, since it'll most always fit in the window.

    Eric,

Can you provide a link to the video where you are seeing this? I need to take a look.

For me I have to click "Hide Details" in order to get the full size video header to appear. Otherwise it is shown with a 500+ px keyword DIV to the right of the video. As far as I know this isn't an option that I have selected or chosen in any setting.

The details is set by cookie - so when you close details, you'll not see that again until YOU ask for it by clicking show details - and thus making your browser smaller and thus making less room for the video.

    It's personal, and cookie based.

What is the initial default case? I can't count on people viewing my videos knowing to select "Hide Details" in order to see a larger video. Perhaps if it said something like "View Larger" it would be different.

Eric, give us a little credit :D Default is off - meaning they have to click it to show details and narrow the space available for videos.

Andy... with all due respect (really), regarding giving credit... how long have iPhones recorded video? (officially) This bug has been around since June... Soooo... :)

I realized something while on a multi-hour drive a few days ago... All of my issues with SmugMug can be explained by one idea... SmugMug is pro-photographer... not pro-consumer. SmugMug is a "FUBU" site for photographers.

I take a lot of photos... and I love photography... but I am by no means a photographer.

The fundamental approach that consumers have (what they want, what they use, what they care about) is completely different than what professional photographers want, use, and care about.

I was going through my mind and thinking about all of my "complaints" with SmugMug... and trying to guess how many of them would bother professional photographers... and it seemed like perhaps none of them would.

I doubt many photographers care if you can upload videos from an iPhone. I doubt most photographers use geolocation in iPhoto or care if their photos can be displayed on a Google map. I doubt most photographers are concerned with the fact that vertically recorded iPhone videos are played sideways... I could go on & on...

SmugMug is simply not a consumer photo site (yet) in my opinion. The priorities are clearly set with the pro / semi-pro photographer in mind. Heck, the chief geek... Andy... a pro photographer.

I'm not sure if SmugMug even WANTS to be a consumer photo site...

BTW, in case there is even a 1% chance that this came across in any way negative (not my intention at all)... Andy has always been extremely friendly and helpful to me... my only point is that he is a professional photographer and so his perspective is from that "angle" rather than from the consumer angle, which I think is often very, very different.

Andy's title isn't chief geek I guess... but it's something like "chief does a bit of everything" :)

We have more non-pros than pros as subscribers. Mom and Pop, Families, weekend shooters with a passion for photography, folks that go to the amusement park or Yosemite National Park, they love photography and sharing pictures. This is how we started and these folks (and you) are a huge important part of our family company.

But all of these non pros have asked for stuff over the years that really has made the site very feature-rich - and with that, it's also quite a job to maintain things, even with a staff as large as ours. There's always something to do.

We'll get the iPhone video thing fixed, I'm really sorry for that one.

Andy, it's been 2+ months. Any ETA on a fix for this bug?

    Thanks,
    Eric

Just ran into this one a couple of weeks ago myself. Was very disappointed that I had to host it directly in Facebook instead of in SM where all of my photos live.

I'm very sorry but you'll need to reupload those. I wish I could tell you otherwise.
