These things are so cheap. Are they any good at all? Thinking a carry around lens. Are they better/worse than Nikon's kit lens of the same (more or less) focal length?

That's the f3.5-5.6.
Gear: D200, G9, Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6, Nikkor 35 f/1.8, Vivitar Series 1 28-105 f/2.8-3.8, Sigma 18-200 f/3.5-6.3

Most of the reviews that I researched regarding the Sigma 18-50mm, f3.5-5.6 DC rated it as worse optically than the cheapest kit lenses by any manufacturer. If you use it at f8 and count on CA correction in post, you could probably achieve some reasonably good images.

I have the Sigma 18-50mm, f2.8 EX DC and it is pretty good, but I would rate the Tamron SP 17-50mm, f2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) as better yet.

The Nikkor 18-55mm, f3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR gets fair reviews and is pretty inexpensive for what you get. Even the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED DX II is not too bad and not much more money than the cheap Sigma.

Best reviews for most of the above lenses:

Thanks for that Ziggy. I spend very little time at f8! And, while I'm still not sure what all the dials/buttons on my camera are for, I'm into sharp images. Other than a 10-20 Sigma, I'm sticking to primes for the time being.
