My first time really shooting skating. I learned that it takes some effort to really get faces in the shots by being creative about where you set up. C&C appreciated as always.

Cool shots. on a few of them if you would have taken the shot a tad later it would have enhanced the shot and they would have been higher in the air. You took a few as they were just ollieing or just airing out. But the quality looks good and like the processing.

perhaps this question belongs elsewhere or is so worn it doesn't belong at all but, as a new member I'll take the plunge. Several of these very good images have recognizable people in them. Would you need to get releases (or parental releases...tough at most skate parks I've visited...to use these images beyond personal use or the sharing that occurs here?

Personally, if I had any intent to go further with these images than using them for bettering myself as a photog or adding to my growing portfolio I probably would have stopped each person I planned to shoot to have them sign a release just to cross my t's...etc. Is it necessary? Frankly I don't think so from what I've read, especially being at a public, city-owned skatepark.

Here's a useful thread and there are many more concerning photographer's rights here:

thanks, very helpful. I guess if an editor requires a release and you don't have one, he won't publish your image...so much the better for legal safety.

I had exactly the same thoughts. I would love to go down to the local skate park to get shots like these but fear being arrested. Do you approach the kids first and introduce yourself? It's becoming such a nanny state here that it's getting ridiculous. You have to even watch how and where you take your own kids photographs.

Never think that. Assuming you're hear in the U.S., you can't be arrested for photography. I'd approach a group at the skate park, tell them what you want to do, and then have business cards to hand them with a link to your site and offer them 800px JPEGs for free.

The first step to being a better photographer is being able to communicate with people and never being afraid to photograph something/someone.
