The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS is quite sharp in the center, but it blurs out toward the edges. On a crop-frame camera this is much less of an issue, but it's quite noticeable on full-frame. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS's sharpness in the corners, on the other hand, is quite good.

Perhaps my copy of the 70-300 IS was an exception to the ff rule At 300mm and 5.6, and also slightly stopped down, it wasn't much of an issue on my 5d.

The photos I posted are RAWs converted to jpegs. No sharpening.
