Finally some decent light...

My son had a high school hockey game on Dec 23 at a college rink. It was so nice to shoot with some decent lighting. I was able to drop my ISO down to 1600. On top of that, the Zamboni driver let me out on the ice between the 2nd and 3rd periods to clean a section of glass from the inside. How nice was that? My pictures definitely seemed sharper than they have been. The great news is that we are going back tomorrow to the same rink for a game and then one more time at the end of January. Here are a few of my favorites. I'm trying to pay more attention to the horizons but I find it very difficult between deciding which looks better I can't keep both the horizontals and the verticals level. I also have been playing more with curves in post processing and using some tips I learned at the Dgrin Shootout this year in Acadia.

    Stephanie,

I like this set! Just a couple of nits

1). Use the verticals to make sure things are level. Pipes, seams in boards etc.

2). Especially when shooting thru the glass, bury the blacks a bit more for better pop!:

profile lists a 40D, unless it's out of date. I think the pics look great as well for 1600. thumb.gif

I also see she is a Med Tech! That's my degree from college...switched careers a few years later, but hey, MTs need to stick together! lol
Canon 7D and some stuff that sticks on the end of it.

Yes, it is a 40D, I run the images thru Neat Image for noise reduction. As I said, the lighting was very good and I slightly overexposed. I find I don't get as much noise if I hit the exposure dead on or overxpose a little versus if I underexpose and then try to adjust in post.

Shot at the same rink again tonight. I'll post if I get a chance. We play there one more time at the end of January.

I am a Med Tech. Have been for 20 years, always in the Blood Bank. What career did you switch to??
