So I acquired a new-to-me Canon 40D, 17-55 f/2.8, 580EXII AND a Gary Fong LS for Christmas... so I went out to play.

Long story short, hubby plays bagpipes in a celtic rock band that travels all over the country (they're booked for Canada the first time this summer!!). While this is not the place to advertise them, I'll just post some of the shots I'm proud of that were acquired this weekend. Yes, that's his day job and yes, he plays Amazing Grace. :D

All were shot with the 40D, 17-55mm combo, not all used flash, I'm still trying to work out my flash technique, Jeffreaux2, you might just convince me to use it constantly after all.

C&C always welcome.

1. (I used a flash, aren't you proud, Mr. Jeff? :) )

7. Compositionally, I hate it, but I'm still drawn to it for some reason

9. Again, crappy lighting but I think it works.

10. This is the husband, too - he doesn't *just* play bagpipes, he sneaks in guitar every once in a while, too.

    Yes...Jeff is PROUD of you!!!:ivar

Nice shooting Lauren!!!.....but we gotta get the flash off that shoe. Off camera flash is perfect for adding backlight and sidelight to this type of work ...and you can move it around between sets to get different looks at the same concert. But that will come...eh?

I like 3, 4 and 7 though 7 could sure use a tad more light on his face. :D

As far as C&C.....I'm not digging the blue borders. What about simple black?ne_nau.gif

...and...Im about to pull the trigger and buy that bag I told you about...for myself....as a late Christmas gift.

Hope your trip went well...Happy New Year!wings.gif

The flash will come off the 'shoe when the Lauren gets a gizmo or a pocket wizard (hubby shoots Nikon so we're kinda leaning towards the brand-neutral wizards)... I'm doing good to even have the Jeff-standard flash in the first place! :)

I don't see a blue border, I see white and I think it's flickr that did it, it looks white on my monitor, which I'm assuming it should be, but I could be wrong. I didn't add borders, so it must all be flickr's doing.

I agree with you on 7, he's a blur when he plays, and when his hat comes off, he's just a big furball that my camera can't find fast enough.

Which bag? We talked about bags? I don't remember that... We just got two more Tamracs, I'm falling more and more in love with my Pro12 the more I use it.

The trip was great, we got 2" of snow Christmas Eve so I got to shoot in snow, something I haven't done since we got our half a foot a year ago - that was fun to play with, 45mph winds... not so much, but the snow was fun!

The original pocket wizards did not support ETTL. The newer "flex" is supposed to, but I have heard mixed reviews. I think...for simplicities sake....you should try your best to maintain ETTL functionality. Otherwise...its "manual" only....like with your old flash.

Im settled on the ThinkTank Airport Security....but not sure if I want the full size or international version. It's a wheeled event-type bag but also has a built in cable lock (for locking it to immovable objects like a bicycle) and TSA locks on all the zippers. Id be able to relax a bit more during events if I werent worried about gear growing legs.eek7.gif

Awesome. Hope all your family is doing well. Enjoy that new gear!!!

hmm... something to consider.. The 580EXII and the 40D talk to each other WAY better than the Quantaray/XT combination ever did. We took the XT out shooting tonight in the drizzle (over concern of getting the 40D wet) and the flash was having issues *again* - this time with husband around to prove that it's not just me. I shot with the 40D/580 combo in my father-in-law's shed and was blown away by that thing, so I know how amazing it is. (I mean, I knew it was amazing but compared to the XT/Quantaray, most everything is amazing)

I remember that now!! We thought about those, too but don't air travel enough to worry about locks. Hopefully that'll change soon, but we'll see. And yes, I'm with you on the gear growing legs, I know the feeling. I've had a car stolen/totalled but never gear (thank GOD for that)

Awesome. Hope all your family is doing well. Enjoy that new gear!!!

And family's doing well, especially after we got news that mother-in-law's cancer isn't as widespread as we thought, something her dermatologist says he can fix with medicine or very minor chemo/surgery. (We thought her breast cancer was back for the third time, which it's not - HURRAY!!) Merry Christmas to us!! clap.gifclapclap.gif
