I found this book as a kindle version on Amazon's website. Does anyone have either the ebook or paperback version? I read part of the first chapter and it seems to be a great book. What are your thoughts?

I just downloaded the Kindle sample and it does seem good. The locale is good for me, my backyard, so to speak. However, images don't work o n the Kindle so the PC format might be worthwhile. I could not find that it has been published on paper for the Amazon site.
    Would like to know, also.

Nick. I do know that it's available in paperback as well. Only seems to be available on amazon though. I actually found it because I downloaded a kindle program for my iPhone. When I went to search it looked at the kindle section of Amazon.com. I've been reading the free chapter and can't wait to pick up the whole book.

There used to be heaps of info and discussion on event photography on forums, now it seems there is not nearly as much. I found a load of papers the other day I printed off when I first got interested in the game, back in 2004!

Surprisingly little of the info seems to have changed other than the technicals such as printers and computers.

I can't think what would be covered in a book that hasn't already been covered on forums and the benefit of forums is you can get more than one perspective.

I would like to see more forums and discussions specifically on event photography. I find it an interesting subject with a lot of variation and different ideas.
I think one of the reasons event photography isn't discussed as much is because there's no money in it anymore. Anyone with a sharp eye and a good set of equipment can get into the event photography game. I see it all the time.

What most don't realize is that it isn't as lucrative as weddings, so that's where the better ones step up to.

Interesting that event photography is just seeming to start out down under. Car and bike enthusiasts are very active there, so that's a huge market you could get into.

Sounds like you have the heart of an enthusiast. I'd love to see some samples of your work. I'm always looking for new inspiration. thumb.gif

Your experience doesn't surprise me. The automotive events sector is very oversaturated with quality photographers. The money isn't in the event pictures as many hobbyist photographers literally give them away, it's in private shoots.

At events, the vehicle owners and photographers don't really have control of the shot. You have to make do with whatever there is there. These images sometimes grab their eye enough to get a sale or two, but what is really happening at events is that you are showcasing your talent by shooting the event. They get to compare your work versus someone else. And if they see you often enough, you'll get a level of respect, a repertoire with the vehicle owners. You'll be seen as a business, not just some hobbyist with a camera. And then when they need a shot of some sort, for a magazine shoot or some special project, they'll call you.

I'm not the best photographer in my area, and my equipment is 5 year old high-end consumer cameras, not even dslr. Yet, I'm known as one of the best photographers in the area. Why? Because people see my best work constantly. I'm at almost every event, and people know who I am.

I charge about $75-$100 per hour for a shoot. This does not include any prints. If I had time to push scheduling shoots, I would be doing at least one shoot a week right now. I have a different business model where the photography revenue isn't the main focus.
