Photos never appear in the "recent" thing

I've tried adding the "recent photos" box to my site a few times now - when I first toggle it on, it says "You don't have any recent photos. Upload some!"

Figured it would have some up there anyway. But OK, I upload some new photos and it doesn't change - still nothing in the recent photo area.

Wondering if I'm misunderstanding how this thing works, or if I screwed it up somehow with code elsewhere?

It is because you have Hello Smuggers set to 'no'
