That is not cutting it on my computer. Previously, my Acer laptop has been my CS4 workhorse, but I'm trying to get my big Dell desktop useable now.

I have a Dell, running Windows XP. I use CS4, and it works fine on this computer, except that it won't take RAW (CR2) files. (Canon). I can never really use this great desktop computer until I fix this.

Any ideas? All I get is the warning "wrong type of file". :bash

This sort of problem is almost always due to running an older version of ACR that does not support the camera you are using. Check the Adobe site for the latest free update, which includes the Canon 7D, G11 and a bunch of other newer cameras.

Well, I'm just using an old Xti. Seems I wouldn't need an update for an older cam. I'll look into it though. I just realized, CS4 is not attempting to open Bridge as I import a RAW file, as it does automatically on my laptop. Maybe this alone will help, if I can get through Bridge?

Strange. Do you mean that you open a CR2 in PS and it skips the ACR step? Try starting Bridge and see if you can open the CR2 in ACR.

Well, I had just gotten Lightroom 2.2, and hadn't installed it yet, till now. Since I need to start using Lightroom for my file managing and initial editing, I used it....and it worked....and I'm stoked! I can now use CR2 files on my big puter. I still don't know why the original problem existed, but now it's moot. Thanks for the help. :D

Did you do an auto or manual install for the Adobe Camera Raw? Do you have Cs4 64bit installed? or just 32?

If you attempted a manual install..then try this file
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4622&fileID=4299

If you used the above file follow these steps for a manual install
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4624

Maybe this is info you already had..but I hope it helps.
