Approaching Magazines

I'd like to hear suggestions/experience on the best way to approach certain magazines to potentially use my photos. Do I just email their editors and introduce myself and include a link to my galleries, or .... ? Not sure what normal protocol is and I don't want to attempt this and look unprofessional.
Thanks all. :D

Hi. There's a book called Photographer's Market that is put out annually. It details which publications are open to receiving freelance work (for instance, don't bother with Nat Geo), and who the contact point is, what format they prefer, what they pay, etc. It also includes some gallery listings, craft shows, and other ways to sell your work. I think I paid ~$45 for last year's copy.

I didn't get it in gear to really use it, so I can't offer more than that, but I did find it very informative.
