Back to the wetlands

Hi you'll.

With the nesting season over at the rookery I've been shooting in the Wetlands again. There aren't as many photo ops as at the rookery but its a lot more quiet, just me, the birds, the gators, and a few million mosquitos.

These were my last shots were the D2h before it stopped metering.

the limpkin was still hanging around

28885668-L.jpg

the GBH is always willing to pose

28885671-L.jpg

the Green Herons haven't realized yet that I now have a 500mm lens and that they are no longer safe in their former hide outs

28885703-L.jpg

the morehen is still the most common bird in the wetlands

28885726-L.jpg

and they are making sure it stays that way

28885728-L.jpg

its mating season may be over but this tri-colored heron believes in keeping up his appearance

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Thank you very much Steve. My D2h is back home and my new tripod set up (Wimberly head and Gitzo 1325 tripod) is due Thursday. I can't stop now. Must shoot, must shoot, must shoot. ............

Great shots, Harry, just great shots.

gonna upload my pathetic connector shots.............the ones I walk a mile or more for, then am a mile or more away, my lens hunts, whine, whine, will see if I got anything.

My rookery has a lot of activity still. Mine seem to be a rookery/wetlands thing. It never was crowded, just me and them and a few tourists walking through. Even with cameras, it was "give them a bird lesson, and they were bored and kept on walking".

    Later,
as Steve says, since you got that camera/lens, whatever you have................ain't no stopping you.

And I knew you when you had a 300.........I think it was.

    And you haven't tried the 1.3 and 1.7 Tx s yet ??

You're gonna love the Wimberly set up on the 1325, Harry. Do you have the levelling head for the 1325 also? I use it for panning an Arca-Swiss head via the panning base with a Wimberly Sidekick and then the pan is always level and even. Not sure if this in needed with the Wimberly Head though.

Do you think saltwater vapor exposure had anything to do with your light meter failing?

    Hi Harry,
I usually just lurk in this forum, but two of these shots I just have to comment on. First, your Heron and other bird shots are top notch and I do enjoy looking at them.

I really like the comp of the green heron. Between the dragonfly, reeds/grass and the pose of the bird, I just have to say Bravo.

Now, the second shot is of the little morehen. If ugly is cuteeek7.gif, this little guy takes the prize.

Thanks for sharing all your pictures,
    Chris

Thanks Ginger. The new lens does make a big, big difference. Now all I need is somebody to carry that bazooka for me. :D

    Hey Ben,

I already have a shot of a GBH munching a dragonfly, don't need another one. :D

I'm using the 1.4 TC now and its excellent. I tried the 1.7 TC with my 300mm lens and wasn't happy. I found it really slowed down the AF.

I got the Wimberly head so I don't need the leveling head. It just arrived and I can't wait to give it a try.

I don't think salt water vapor had anything to do with my D2h's metering failure. Its a known issue with the camera and I'vee shot more in Florida with my D100 with no problems. Plus the D100 isn't weather resistant as the D2h is.

Thanks Chris. You only think the morehen chick is ugly because you haven't seen the picture of the tri-colored chick.

    Ack, Ack!
I don't even think a mother could like this.

Probably grows up to be a beautiful bird. I can see why nothing wants to eat it, it might catch whatever it has:puke1.

Of course, it's all in the eyes of the beholder...but damn, that's scary:jawdrop.

I'll keep my bugs, thank you.

Thanks Gary. I didn't shoot the launch. Its way too much hassle. You have to get out to a spot early in the day and then wait a few hours in 90+ heat. Then its more likely than not that the launch will be scrubbed. If it isn't you are still too far off from getitng a really good shot.
