More Keywording Issues

I did a fair bit of searching around on this topic but couldn't find anything that had been fully resolved, or applied to the issue I'm having...

For some reason that I can't seem to methodically figure out, my keywords seem to be extremely buggy. I'm pretty sure the formatting is correct (many of my keywords are peoples' full names with spaces) because the keywords will register with no problem on one photo but not another. It seems to be completely random, and has nothing to do with alphanumerics either.

I'm uploading directly to my galleries from Lr2 using Jeff Friedl's plugin. When I bulk upload, smugmug will register roughly 1-3 keywords from any given image, but no more. I re-uploaded a single photo, and it registered 11 out of 12 keywords instead of 1. If I click to edit the keywords, no new ones show up as some people are reporting. And I think at this point it's safe to say I've given smugmug enough time to "index" my keywords as nothing has changed in the gallery I uploaded on Sept 30, 2009... In fact, I still get a message next to my keywords on some of those photos saying "[indexing: xxxx]" where x is a photo filenumber. Finally, in the visitor view, even fewer keywords show up.

I apologize if I'm rambling - let me try to sum things up:

1. Not all of my keywords register on upload, even given 3+ MONTHS to index.
3. Alphanumerics and spaces are not an issue, as these keywords register on some photos but not others, with no rhyme or reason. Thus I'm having trouble finding error in my settings either in lightroom, or smugmug.
3. "Editing" keywords does not force smugmug to index any faster, or magically make new keywords appear.
4. Visitor view and owner view are not consistent with keywords that DO index.

Any pointers are greatly appreciated! I really hope there's some mistake in my upload settings or something. Right now though, my suspicion is that the uploader (though certainly no speed demon rendering and uploading full res 5DII raw files), is going too fast for smugmug, and the keywords are getting lost in translation.

My homepage is http://brphotographs.smugmug.com

My Sept 30th 2009 gallery is
http://brphotographs.smugmug.com/Running/Spring-Track-09/
(the first image displays my weird 'indexing' message)

And hopefully this link is right, this is the image that registered 2 keywords during bulk upload, then 11 out of 12 when re-uploaded individually:

I am running Firefox 3.5.6, Mac OSX 10.6.2, Lightroom 2.6, and Jeff's plugin version 20091209.133 (20091230.139 is the newest version as of this posting)

Sorry for the indexing issue. :( I'm not sure what happened with it.

I've reindexed your site and it looks like the keywords have all been indexed.
    Check this one again: http://brphotographs.smugmug.com/Running/Spring-Track-09/9801474_8oEaY#665599921_PPjW9

The one image you stated only 2 keywords were added during during bulk uploading, I wasn't able to find that image. Only the one with 12 keywords: http://brphotographs.smugmug.com/Running/XC-09/10884169_ub5Fg#759678184_xegwK

If you have the one that only had two keywords, shoot me a link at the help desk and I'll take a look for you. http://www.smugmug.com/help/emailreal Send attn: richW

Excellent, thanks. I'm still having a few issues but at least we're getting somewhere. I'm also a little relieved to know it wasn't just something I'm doing wrong. :D

Now, I deleted the new gallery (XC'09) and recreated it to upload the images again. Some of the keywords are still not indexing but the problem is more consistent now.

    1. Smugmug isn't parsing my filenames into keywords in the new gallery. Text prefixes I'd like it to be grabbing, but filenumber suffixes aren't important (is there a way to turn that part off, once I get it to parse the filenames?).

    2. It looks like the same people/keywords are being completely omitted from the gallery. For example "rob dill" shows up as a keyword in all of his photos, but "brandon rodkewitz" (myself) fails to index in any photos of me. There are still a number of these keywords being completely omitted, and at least some of them worked in the older, Sept. 30th gallery (spring track '09)

Link to the new gallery again:

    Thanks again!

I grabbed a copy of the original of file #bluegold-8133 and uploaded to my site and the file name index as a keyword. Grab below.

Did you have the 'Filename Keywording' option enabled in the control panel prior to uploading?

Sorry, we don't have a tool to keep form adding the suffixes. You can remove the numeric keywords using the caption/keyword too. There is a numeric option in that tool.

Which image should have your name as a keyword? How did you add it, prior to uploading in the IPTC or did you use the keyword tool in the gallery?

Hmm is the filname keywording option under gallery settings, or the main control panel (with account info, passwords, etc)?

Removing the file numbers is fine by me once the photos are on smugmug should I choose to do it. I'd rather the site be collecting too many keywords than missing some.

I appreciate your in-depth look into this issue. BlueGold-8133 is correctly keywording on both of our sites. All of my keywording is done in lightroom prior to upload. Rather than looking into backing up my site, I keep lightroom collections of all the site's content as my offline backup. I'd hate to lose all that keywording work if anything ever happened to my site. Other than the filenames, all keywords are theoretically embedded in the IPTC info on upload. If I export anything to jpeg on my hard drive the keywords are all properly embedded. Likewise, if I "Owner Save" any images that have been uploaded with missing keywords, everything is properly embedded in the file info on my desktop.

Here are some of the photos that should have my name as one of the keywords:

make sure that this option is deselected in the LR plugin...

I downloaded the original image here...and reuploaded, and the keywording worked fine.

you can try the same, download the original and upload with one of SmugMug uploaders...I believe that the issue you are seeing might be a LR plugin bug.

Yup, that option's been deselected the whole time. I've read through all of those keywording options in the plugin a hundred times, maybe I'll report this bug to Jeff Friedl himself. I figured it was likely to be a plugin issue, since the keywords are clearly being properly embedded in the images. And had it been a smugmug site issue, it probably would be well documented and fixed by now. I'll just forego the plugin for now and export to local files to drop in a different uploader.

    Thanks!

I'm having the same problem. I just started using Lightroom and the plug-in to move my images from a custom Coppermine gallery to Smugmug. Got one gallery imported with no issues. Tried the next one and it looks like Smugmug has the keywords when I look using the Admin view. But when I use the Visitor View, no joy.

Glad to know it might be the plug-in and not operator error.

    Thanks

Make sure you have SmugIslands settings set right for the gallery. If you don't enable Smugmug searching, then keywords are only indexed when logged in, not for the public.
