Double Tone Mapped HDR

Recently picked up a copy of Trey Ratcliff's new book "A World in HDR". It's not so much a "How To" book as a wonderful compendium of images and the philosophy of seeing and capturing them in HDR. The book also contains a lot of tips and "secrets" for producing better HDR images. I was particularly interested in his technique of "double tonemapping" and like how it worked on the images below. These three are single Raw image HDR's tone mapped twice. I've posted the XL size of each image but as Trey states, they really look best in much larger size. Accordingly, if you have a pretty large monitor CLICKING ON THE IMAGES will take you to a much larger image in a new window.

Trey also has a wonderful HDR photo blog at stuckincustoms.com
BTW he also makes no apology for wide angle distortion :D

Very cool images, Jack! I've experimented with double-tonemapping myself in the past and gotten some pretty crazy results. Your images are making me think I need to pick it up again. thumb.gif

Dang, Jack. You keep this up and you're going to force me to get off my lazy butt and try some new techniques. Nice work.

    Take care,

Thanks joel. These were all tonemapped with "Detail Enhancer". One key is to decrease the strength and saturation on the second go-round

I'm not a follower of the HDR Cult, but your first image has just knocked me off my socks. I'll put them socks on again as soon as I pick up my jaw.

I've bought a lot of photography books in the last couple of years but this book is one of the few that I have read thru cover to cover!

Love the second one....maybe because I used to stand in front of that building every night to catch my bus home.

That sure is a strange building what with no windows to speak of. It looks like a fortress!
