Count of items in a feed?

Hi folks,
I'm using smugmug to present images to my site I intended to tidy the gallery up so that the images are thumbnails and there is a text description and a county of the images. So it would be 'Thumbnail, Headshots, 20 images' etc. I'm using an RSS feed based on keywords to extract the images, is there a way of counting the number of images in the feed and then putting that on to the page?
If anyone has any suggestions on nice gallery layouts for Wordpress that would be cool too :thumb
