Couple of winter flies

Expect to see the first fly type- a Window gnat in Winter - about 5mm body length but was suprised to find the second type ID'd as Norellia spinipes, Scatophagidae by Diptera.info. - about 7mm body length.

How do you get so close when photographing these little guys with out them "flying away" (pun intended )

Normally it's just a matter of moving in slowly and carefully. The second fly was not quite like that however- it was obviously feeling the cold and I actually was rounding it up with my finger to get it to face the right way . It did eventually get fed up with me and fly off.
