Tips on shooting in the city.

On saturday I am going to Downtown Chicago and the lakefront for Venetian Night. It's where a bunch of boats get all dolled up and cruise the lakefront putting on an act. This years theme is "Rock the Boat". Check out more info http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/search/34851,0,1474190.event

I'm going to go down earlier and take some pictures of the city and then will take more during the event and afterwards during the fireworks. I'm looking for any tips you may have for taking pictures in the city (mostly pics of buildings, not soo much people) since I have never done it before, and also for taking pictures at dusk and night for the boat parade. I think the boat parade will be tough because there will be low light to darkness and the boats will be moving.

I have a 20D with the kit 18-55mm and a 10-22mm. I wish I had the 28-135 IS I just got but saddly I waited too long and will have to wait for it to get here. I do have a tri-pod, a really cheep pathetic one, and I think I may get a cable release.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Get there before sunset do a little shooting to warm up and check things out.
Get in close with 10-22

Then if night shots are what your after....just after sunset when the sky turns blue makes for nice sky color.
And don't forget to shoot the sunset too.

Thanks Fred, I was thinking about getting there at 4 or 5 and walking around downtown and taking some shots of the Sears Tower, the Chicago Public Library, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium, and Millenium Park. Should be a busy day. It's supposed to be sunny and in the mid 80's so there will probably be 10's of thousands of people there by the time everything starts. When the fireworks are going off all the traffic on Lake Shore Drive comes to a complete stop. the sunset shots should be nice because from where i'll be at it sets behind the city so I'll have nice colors behind the outline of the city buildings. It's a good time, I'll definitely have fun.
