mehampson - As the midge was on a black damp surface (a compost bin lid) I put a blue milk bottle top about 1 " behind it to give some colour reflection. I tend to have a few coloured objects in my jacket for this purpose

Quite often put coloured objects behind subjects if the background is boring- works best if the surface is damp as you get colour reflection back onto the surface the subject is on.
